Nylander (m Bull. Soo. Linn. Norm. ser. 2, vi. p. 278 (1872)) has
more recently suggested th a t this is only a state in which the thallus
remains longer of a paler colour, though a t length in the herbarium
it becomes concolorous with th at of the type. In the single British
specimen the areolæ are somewhat scattered, with the hypotballus
very conspicuous.

Var. y lutescens Nyl. I. c.—Thallus smoothish, pale-ochroleucous

Characterized by the paler thallus which apparently does not
become reddish in the herbarium. Nylander says th a t it often has
the aspect of L. marginata Schær., but differs from th a t in the internal
colour of the apothecia. The single British specimen is well fertile,
both apothecia and spermogones being frequent.
