'Pjru long interval in time between the publication of Parts I.
and I I . of the Monograph of British Lichens has been caused
by the continued ill-health and ultimate death of the Rev. James
Crombie, the author of P a rt I. Mr. Cromhie had determined,
and partly arranged, a number of specimens, and had also begun
to prepare descriptions of the genera and species for P a rt II .,
wlien the work was finally interrupted by his death in 1906.
His collections, together with his MSS., were generously presented
to the Trustees of the British Museum by Mrs. Crombie,
and I was fortunately able to arrange with Miss Annie Lorrain
Smith to continue the work. In the preparation of P a rt II.
Miss Smith has followed the form and arrangement adopted in
P a rt I . , except where divergence seemed absolutely necessary.
