In several respects tbis species approaches the foüoiriug genus Catalrosa, especiaUy in the smab glumes, the
upper one of which is erose or toothed at the apex, and in the remote bases of tbe styles, but tbe paleæ are not
truncated, tbougb obtuse, and the florets are always four in number.
In the verj- short glumes and indeed in the entire structure of the spikelets, florets and then- squamulæ and
ovarium, it resembles the Sphenapus divaricati^, Eeich., with which it ftu-ther agrees in the branching of the panicle,
its few flowers being placed towards the apices of the branchlets ; but it has not the general habit of that
curious bttle grass, nor the pecnbarly thickened pedicels to the spikelets. hi. Euuth (Agrost., p. 392), has reduced
the genus Sphenopus (Trinius) to Festuca ; hut Theodore Nees, in his beautiful genera of German plants, has retained
that generic name and pubbshed an excebent analysis of it ; I quite agree with him in considering it as more
closelv aUied to Poa, in which genus its original describer, Gonan, placed it, than to Festuca,

My specimens of this grass, tliongli not in so good a state as is desirable, are, I think, sufficient to prove it a
most distinct species of an European genus, which reaches m Great Britaiu the parabcl of 69°, the 67th degree in
Lapland and Iceland, and the 67 th in North America.
The present species ibffers considerably from the type of the genus, in its slender habit aud iia iTOW leaves, and
more particiüarly in the larger glumes being less tnmcated and narrow'er, in the more unequal paleæ and obscure
nerves of the lowrer one, and in the veiy short anthers.
