The plants of this genus, though widely diffused tluoughout the temperate regions of South America, apparently
reach no further soutli than the Strait of Magalhaens, aud aix more characteristic of the vegetation of the ivest than the
east coast. The present seems distmct from the higlily variable species of Chib and Buenos Ayres, in its marginate
leaflets and sobtary large flowers ; upon the former of these characters much stress cannot be laid, for the presence
of bracteolæ on the pedicel indicates a tendency to branch, and a plant from Cape Eairweather, so similar to this in
all other respects that I consider it a variety, has two and even thixe flowers on the peduncle, wlbch is elongated
beyond the leaves.

foliola i - f unc. longa, Peimculi longitudine varii. petiolo semper longiores, Plores ut in proecedente.
This differs from the V. Udcntata, Hook., not only in the same points, except the c u tM , as the last species,
but in tbe few leaflets. The broad leaflets, simple cm-bi and differently shaped stipules, short and erect petioles,
well distinguisb it from V. Kingii. Though these three plants have much afiinity, I consider them distinct ; having
compared them with extensive suites ot the Chilian and Buenos Ayrean species, irith none of which they accord.
Some of the latter again, are very widely dispersed, and it appears to me probable, tbat more than one Chflian species
is common also to North America, and to the higher mountains of Mexico. Columbia and Peru.^

I have seen no specimens of this from the Strait of Magabiaens ; those from wHcb tbe foregoing description is
drawn up having been gathered at Cape Fafrweather, a few miles northward of Fuegia proper, on the east coast of
Patagonia, by Capt. King, in wdiosc coUection there exists a third species from the same locabty, perhaps only a
variety of L. nervosus, Lam. (Hook. Bot. Mag. t. 3987.) The L. Magellanicus is harcUy distinguishable from a probably
midescribed Peruvian species.
