This is a handsome and very distinct plant, with more the habit of growth of the European species than of the
lai'ger and more lea^' H. redolens or antárctica. It is veiy abundant in some parts of the islands now under consideration,
always growing in exposed situations, where its gi-aceful habit and nodding panicles are a great ornament to
the drearj' regions it inhabits.

CamphelVs Islands.] FLO RA ANTARCTICA. 95
Of this grass I have oiby seen immature specimens, with the panicle, however, fuby foimed; it is very distinct
from any species with which I am acquainted, certaiiby wanting the rudimentary setula of the second floivcr, and,
as far as I can observe, the upper palea also. Its habit and general appearance are decidedly those of A. Bdlardieri,
Br. and A . oeimda, Br., plants which have been removed not only from this genus, but into a separate division of
the Natural Order {Anmdiuaceæ) as it is now divided. These, with several other Anstraban and New Zealand species
appear to form a very natural gi'oiip, though they vaiy in the presence or absence of the upper palea, of the setula,
of the awn, and of a bearded pedicel to the flower; neither the genus Laclinagrostis (foimded by Trinius) as defined
by Nees (Act. Acad. Cæs. Leop., &c., vol. xix. Suppl. p. 146), nor Beyeuxia, Clar., as adopted by Kuntli (Agi-ost.,
p. 239.), wib include these species. Under whatever genus they may rank, their affinity appears to me to be near
Agrostis, L. and not with Calamagrostis, Adans. and Arundo, L.

Tbis is not an uncommon grass at tbe bases of precipices and on tbe exposed slopes of the island. I t is remarkable
for being nearly aUied to a species brought by Dr. Jameson from the extreme verge of vegetation on
Pichincha in Colombia, the A. f oliata *, mihi ; that species is, however, more leafy and its whole culm is enclosed in
the sheathing vaginæ.
