3. Calithamnion hirtiim. Hook. fil. et Harv.; caulibus nigrescentibus intertextis, primariis robustis
basi veuosis continuis Mrtis apice ai-ticulatis, secundariis elongatis ramulis pinnatis quadrifariis densissime
vestitis, pinnubs simpbcibus incurvis obtusis, articubs diametro sesqui-longioribus. (Rib . L X X V III. Eig. II.)
H ab. Lord Auckland’s group ; parasitic on otber seaweeds.
Caules cæspitosi, fibris intertextis basi comitati, 2-3 une. longi, robusti, vage quacbifaiiam ramosi, per totam
longitudinem ramubs quadi-ifariis densissime velati. Rami caub similes, longitudine varii ; rarmdi inferiores breves
caulibus babitum birtmn fimalemve impextiunt, superiores longiores et pinnati evadunt ; secundarii (v. plumulæ)
pinnati, pinnis altciTiis erecto-patentibus elongatis obtusis incurvis, racbide flexuosa. Color atro- v. fusco-ruber.
Sphærosporæ spbæricæ, sobtariæ, latere interiore ramub affixæ, pusülæ. Suhstantia rigidiuscula.—Cbai-tæ adhæret.
In habit this approaches the C. ietricum, but after a careful comparison both with that aud with C. Arbuscula,
which it also resembles, we are comdnced that it is distinct from either. The plumules are very different from those
of the fonner species and larger than in the latter. I t is not bkely to be confoimded with, any other species.

4 . Calithamnion micropterum, Hook. fil. et Harv.; p arm m, erectum, caule articulato parce ramoso,
ramis disticlbs alternis circumscriptione obovatis obtusis bi-tripinnatis, pinnis alterne multifidis flexuosis,
pinnubs erecto-patentibus obtusis, articubs caubs ramorumque diametro 2-3-plove longioribus, ramulorum
diametro aquantibus, spbærosporis sessibbus sobtariis elbpticis,
H ab . Lord Auckland’s group ; parasitical on P tilo ta formosissima. {Dr. Lyall.)
Radix scutata. Caidis subsobtarius, 2-3 bn. longus, erectus, parce distiche et alterne divisus. Rami basi pinnis
sìmpbcibi^ ornati, superne bi-tripinnati, nunc pinnubs alterne multifidis ut in C. tetragono. Ramuli alterni, inferiores
simpbces, superiores iterimi divisi. . Articuli peUucidi, rosei, venis destituii. Sphæi'osporæ minutæ, ramubs spai-sæ,
appressæ, eUipticæ, massam qiiadrifidam includentes. Color pulcherrime roseus. Substantia tenera.
This does not belong to the parasitical, section of the genus t\q)ified by C. Damesii, but rather resembles some
of the lai'ger species, as C. tetragonum, to which, in the form of the joints, the disposition, shape and relative size of
the sphærospores, it is closely abied.

I . Conferva Pacifica, Mont., Prodr. Phyc. Antarct. p. 16. Voy. au Pole Sud, Bot. Crxjpt. p. 7.
H ab. Lord Auckland’s gro u p ; on rocks in th e sea, very abundant.
Cæspites 3—4 une. longi, vage funiculari-cbvisi, e fibs gracibbus intricatis læte virentibus compositi. Fila ramosissima
; ramis inferioribus irregulariter ramosis, ramulos radiciformes hic iUic emittentibus, superioribus vage ramosis
dichotomis v. secundis, ramubs erectis, supremis appressis elongatis strictis. Articuli partis inferioris breves, diametro
2-3-plove longiores, superiores sensim elongati, ramulonim supremorum longissimi. Color læte viridis, nitens.
Suhstantia membranacea.—Chartæ adhæret.
This species is nearly related to the C. arcta of Europe, to some varieties of which, especiaUy that caUed
C. centralis, it bears a very close resemblance.
The C. virgata, Ag., is enumerated by Montagne in lbs Flora of the ‘ Voy. au Pole Sud.’
2. CONFEKYA verticillata, Hook. ffl. et Harv.; cæspitosa, fflis graciffimis strictis p an im divisis, ramis
lateralibus simplicissimis longissimis erectis strictis oppositis ternis quaternisve, articulis fili primam diametro
multoties, ramorum quadruplo, longioribus pellucidis.
H ad. Lord Auckland’s group ; on rocks in th e sea, very abundant.
Fila tenuissima, 4 unc. longa, rigidula, simplicia v. parum divisa, erecta, stricta, ramis lateralibus ornata. Rami
sæpius temi quatemive, verticillati, rarius bini, rarissime alterni, longissimi, filo primario longiores, erecti, strictissimi,
simplices, ramulis onmino dcstituti, apice spliacelati. A rtiadi fifi primarii diametro 7-8-plo longiores, clavati, geni-
cuUs iiodosis, ramorum cylindracei diametro 3-4-plove longiores. Color siccitate luride vmdis, opaca ; planta vivente
paUida, subhyalina.—Chartæ laxe adhæret.
Very nearly afiied to C. flagelli/ormis, Suhr, a native of the Cape of Good Hope, agreeing with that plant iu
the remarkahle ramification, hut differing in the more slender habit, not being one halt the diameter, and in having
much larger articulations, especially on the main thi-eads, which are singulaily clavate with swollen joints, a character
we do not observe in any states of O.Jlagelliforrais. I t cannot be confounded with any other species of the genus.

Equally abimdant in the Antarctic as in the Northern Seas. Montagne gives the C. aihcerens, Ag., as a native
of this group.

The TJ. reticulata, Forsk., is mentioned by Montagne as a native of this group.

This differs from the European P. mdgarie in the rigid texture of the frond, wliich is not always simple in the
Cape of Good Hope specimens. Tlie P. eolmnbina, Mont.. appeai-s to he the same plant.

We have observed what wc take to be tliis species, together with an Achnanthea and several other imperfect
