C I Z E and fhape o f the Goldfinch. Bill black, with whitifh
3 edges : head, neck, bread, belly, and tail, black: wings the
fame, marked with a Angle white fpot in the middle : the ends of
the greater coverts ferruginous : fome of the prime quills and fe-
eondaries edged with yellow : legs black.

T Obferve one of thefe figured among Mr. Middleton’s India
drawings. The general colour indigo blue. The bill very
hooked at the point, and the bafe befet with long hairs, fome of
them reaching beyond the t ip : hides yellow, furróunded with
black : the top o f the head mottled with b la ck : on the lower
part o f the neck a narrow black crefcent: belly white.
This is not uncommon about Calcutta and other parts of India-,
and feeds on flies.

T H A V E twke met with this bird in drawings done in India, in
•*“ which the cinnamon-coloured one was expreffed as the female of
the white one. The name given to them was Shawlul, which
means the King of Singing Birds, as the bird is laid to have a moft
delightful note *.

Bird, or Bee-Eater. Appears the latter end of March, or beginning
of April. Lays five fmall white eggs. Difappears in Auguft.
