behind the eye, another, continuing on each fide to the
bread:: the feathers of the lower part of the neck before are long,
narrow, and loofe, as is mod o f the Heron tribe; the colour
o f them, and the lower part of the neck, a deep afh : the bread
ferruginous chefnut: back very deep alh-colour : quills and tail
black: the loofe feathers on the rump much like thofe on the
fore part of the neck, with a mixture of ferruginous: the belly
pale ferruginous alh-colour: legs dull yellow; the fore part o f
them, the toes, and daws, black.
This fpecies inhabits Africa, from whence a fpecimen has been
received into the Leverian Mufeum. A fecond fpecimen is likewife
in the fame colleftion, which was Ihot in AJhdown Park, near
Lamlourn, Berks, belonging to Lord Craven.

flit near the bafe : the fore part of the head, as far as the throat,
and fides, o f a rich green: crown o f the head, and neck, deep
brown, marked with a few great green fpots: upper part o f the
back brown; the lower like the neck: wing coverts white;
ridge and. lower parts pale brown : fecondaries fine deep green :
bread, belly, and primaries, white : tail black : legs long, fcaly,
reddilh: toes webbed at the bafe: claws Ihort.

1 alfo obferve another, which differs in having the beginning of
the back mottled brown and white, and the white on other parts
not
not pure. I have likewife feen this bird in other drawings, in
which the whole o f the upper part of the back, and the under
parts, were of a pure white. 1 apprehend that thefe diftin&ions
mark the fex o f the bird.
C 1Z E o f the Blue Gaulding : length two feet. Bill three inches
^ and a half long, dufky brown : at the back part of the neck
hangs a long black creft: fides of the neck pale yellow ; the fore
part o f it bright bay, edged with white and black : back, wings,,
belly, tail, and legs, black.
Inhabits India. Met with in plenty in the province o f Oude,
and in other parts, in low watery places; but is not accounted
good food *.
