O N E of thefe, from Hudfon’s Bay, given to me as the female of
this fpecies, had the upper parts brown, mottled with dufky
white, not unlike the male, but lefs bright: fides of the head and
fore part o f the neck white, fparingly marked with brown fp ots:
belly white, marked with longilh Breaks o f black ; the ends of
the feathers being black for fome length : the quills, rump, and
tail, as in the male : in both, the fides o f the body have feveral
black feathers, above two inches in length, arifing at the junftion
o f the wing. In both, the bill and legs are black, and a fpur
ferves inftead of a hind toe. In Ihort, this reputed female is fo like
the Grey Sandpiper, that, the belly excepted, which in the Englifb
one is not marked with black, one mutt fuppofe them to be mere
varieties o f each other.
Grey Sandpiper, Gen. Syn. v. p. 168. N° 11.
J N the roof of the mouth o f this bird is a double row o f fpinous
appendages pointing inwards: tongue the length o f the b i l l :
under the wing the fame long black feathers, eight or nine in
number, as obferved above of the Swifs Sandpiper: and no back
toe, only a fpur, much as in the Petrel.
