des Planches qui font cotées N“ 24. 23. 26. je palfe à la fuivante
N? 32. li ce que j’ en dis eft un peu plus long que ce que j’ écrirai des
autres, c eft pour montrer avec combien de facilité j’eulfe pû m’étendre
d avantage & comment il eft aifé de fuppléer à ce que je ne dis pas.
On m’aura fans doute obligation d’avoir mis en note des details,
qui m’ont paru trop ennuyeux pour mériter d’être traduits, peut-être
même qu’on trouvera que j’autois encore mieux fait de les fupprimer
entièrement, & de m’en tenir à la fimple indication des chofes; c’eft
le parti que j’aurois pris, fi je ne me fulî'e cru obligé de juftifier les
raifons fur lesquelles je me fuis fondé, pour croire que les fujets que
je tente d’expliquer pourroient bien être tels que je les dis. Si donc
quelqu un blaraoit cet arrangement, comme je ne pourrois défapprou-
ver le principe qui m’a déterminé, puifqu’il n’eft autre chofe que le
refpeft que j’ai pour le Public, & la Confidération que j’ai pour celui
même qui me blameroit de le pouffer trop loin, je lui promets, en
reconnoilfance de fa bonne opinion, de me repentir d’avoir cédé à la
crainte qui m’a retenu, & de donner la tradudion de ces notes dont
fa critique même feroit un éloge que je fuis bien éloigné de me flatter
de mériter jamais.
