conduB feeming to reproach that o f their Brethren has made them their
enernies , and as they are moft in number, and that their opinions muft
have an effeB upon the reputation o f the former , they haw obliged
them to facrifice their advancement in the Art to their fortune, and to
quit early a method which the tafte o f their Country, and the necejjity
o f ferving it , would have forced them to abandon ; One may fee
the Apology which PouJJin makes for his manner.
Such are , amongst us , the Principal , hut , not the foie caufes
o f the corruption o f Tafte , we fee , that the Admirers o f the
Arts , and the Artifts themfelves , have almoft equaly contributed thereto
: it would be an important affair for each o f them , were they
shewn the means o f repairing the E v il , that has been committed ;
for , they are all particularly concern’d therein : The firft , from the
love they have for painting , the fécond , from the pleafure they
would enjoy , in feeing an art , which they exercife , honour d , lefides
the advantage , which would , refult , in regard to their fortune,
I beleive after what has been juft faid , that , there can be no
doubt , that Painting , fuch as it is in our days , muft be very
inferior , tho what it was in the days o f Raphael : all the World
knows , that , this great man afcended so much , beyond what was
doing before his time , that he is fuperior to every thing , that is
doing at prefent ; Almoft alone with Michael-Angelo , be knew how
to ftrike out ways for the Art unknown in his Century , and carried
it to the higheft perfeBion , that has happen’d in our modern
times ; but , as it was not barely by following the manner o f thofe
, who exifted before them, that thefe two immortal Artifts reform’d
painting , and that , we know befides , that , it was not only from
themfelves , but from the juft ftudy o f the Works o f the -Antients ,
that they drew their principal refources , a fearch after thofe Maxims,
they had learnt from them , would be evidently reaff'uming the ■ thread
o f thofe principles , which amongst the Antients and Moderns , have ■
conduBed the Art to that pitch , to which , Experience has shown us,
it may arrive .
When we attentively . examine the Works o f Michael-Angelo , and

qu'ils c royoient le meilleur : mais dès-lors , leur conduite paroilTant
un reproche à leurs con freres, ceux-ci font devenus leurs ennemis ; &
comme ils formoient le plus grand nomb re , & que par là même leur
opinions décidoient de la réputa tion des p remie rs, ils les ont obligés de
facrifier leur avancement à leur fo r tu n e , & de qu itte r de bonne heure
une méthode , que d’ailleurs le goût de leur pays & la néceflité de
le fla tte r , les auroit dans la fuite contraint de r é fo rm e r . O n peut v o ir
fur ce que je viens de dire , V A p o lo g ie que Nico la s Pouffin fut
o b lig é de faire de sa maniéré attaquée par des adverfaires tels que
ceux dont je viens de p a r le r .
T elles font chez nous les pr inc ip ales , mais non les feules caufes
de la co rrup tion du g o û t , & l’on v o it que les Amateurs & les A r -
tiftes y ont prefqu ’également con tr ib u é : il feroit intéreffant p ou r chacun
d’eux , qu’ on leur montrât les moyens de réparer le mal qui
s’eft fait ; car ils y ont tous un in té rê t p a r t ic u lie r , les uns pa r l’amour
qu’ils ont p ou r la Peinture , les autres pa r le plaifir q u ’ils auroient
de v o ir honorer l ’ art qu’ils e x e r c en t, 8c par l’avantage qui en reful-
teroit pour leur fo r tu n e .
Je crois qu’après ce que nous venons de d ir e , on ne peut gueres
douter que la P e in tu re , telle q u ’elle eft aujourd’h u i , ne fo it for t inférieure
à ce qu’ elle é toit du temps de Raphaël ; tout le monde fait
que ce grand homme s’ éleva autant au deffus de ce que l ’on fa ifoit
a vant lu i , qu’il eit fupérieur à to u t ce que l ’on fait à p réfent; prefque
feul a v e c M ic h e l-A n g e , il fu t frayer à l ’A r t des chemins inconnus
à fon fiecle , & le p or ta au plus haut p o in t où il fo it a rrivé
dans nos temps modernes ; mais comme ce ne fut pas en fuivant la
maniéré de ceux q u i v iv o ie n t avant eux , que ces deux immortels
