the prefence o f the objeB that caufes my admiration.
A circumftance no lefs aftonishing is , that in fp ite o f the united
diffcultics , the Ballance and laws o f Equilibrium arc obferved in the
figures upon tbefe Fafes with fo much cxaBneft, that you never pcrcei-.
v e the conftraint ; it is to the great intelligence which this cxaBneft
implies , and to the tafte o f fiimplicitj the Artifts fought fo r in their
figures , that we muft attribute the Grace that is confpkuous in every
part o f them .
When one is acquainted with the conftraint to which the Painters
o f theft Vafes were f tb jc B , one might furely forgive them i f they
had not been f o expert in giving exprejfion, and making tbeir figures
fpeak , but fa r from having any thing to reproach them with upon
this head , which , with grace , is perhaps the mrjl difficult , as is
it furely the moft important o f all thofe , o f which the A r t o f
Painting is compofed , one can not fufficiently admire with wbat art
they gave exprejjion in the midft o f f t many difficulties . One may
he convinced o f wbat I have advanced , ly looking at the laft Plate
o f the fir ft Volume , where Atalanta at the end o f her race is
j lo p p d hy Hippomenc , you will fe e in her face and in her head
which inclines upon her bofam , that she wished to hide the shame
o f being conquer'd ; Hippomenc lifts her up in the attitude perhaps
o f all others the moft proper to shew a great velocity , he tenderly
prefj'es in his Arms the body o f his beloved , and his join'd hands
agreeing with the expreffion in bis countenance, and aBion o f his neck,
feem to ask her pardon fo r the viBory be has gained over her ; his
body inclining backwards feems to be apprehenfive that the violent
fwiftnefs o f Atalanta might carry him forward , and occafion a fall
which would he dangerous fo r her whom be loves better than the Ufe
which be bad juft expofed to obtain her . I ask thofe who have well
que les traits une fois commencés ne peuvent s’ arrêter que dans les
endroits où ils rencontrent d’autres lignes qui les coupent ou les terminent;
ainfi le profil d’une tête doit, par exemple, être exécuté d’un
feul trait qui ne doit s’interrompre qu’à fcndtoit où il rencontre le
cou, & lorfque le Peintre a une cuilfe & une jambe à faire, il faut
quil en détermine tous les contours fans quitter le pinceau, qui defcendant
du haut en bas doit être employé de pointe, lorfqu’il vient
à tracer des traits horizontaux, & remonter enfuite de bas en haut
pour achever le côté oppofé à celui qu’il a commencé ; j’ ai à préfent
fous les yeux le fait que je décris, & qui me paroit encore incroyable
, maigre la préiènce de l’objet qui caufe mon admiration.
Une chofe qui n’étonnera pas moins, c’eit que malgré tant d’obila-
cles léunis, la Pondération & les loix de l’Equilibre font obfervées dans
les figures peintes fur ces Vafes avec une telle juftelfe, que la contrainte
ne s’y remarque jamais : C’eft à la grande intelligence que fuppofe
cette exaêlitiide , & au goût de fimplicité que les Artiftes ont
cherché dans leurs figures, qu’il faut attribuer les graces que par-tout
ou y trouve répandues .
Quand on connoit la contraints à laquelle étoient alfujettis ceux
qui ont fàit les Peintures dont nous parlons, on leur pardonneroit feus
doute de n’avoir pas été fort habiles à donner l’Expreflion, & à feire
parier les figures qu’ ils avoient à rendre ; mais loin d’ avoir rien à
leur reprocher fur cette partie qui,avec la Grace, eft peut-être la plus
difficile, comme elle eft fûrement la plus importante de toutes celles
qui compofent f art de la Peinture , on ne peut alfez admirer avec
combien d’adrellê ils ont fu la rendre, à travers les extrêmes difficultés
qu’ils ont eues à furmonter pour y réuilir. On fera convaincu de ce
que j’ avance , en jettant les yeux fur la derniere Planche de notre
premier Volume, où Atalante vers la fin de fe courfe eft arrêtée par
Hippoméne, vous voyés fur fon vifege, & dans fa tête qui fe panche
fur fon fein comme fi elle vouloit fe cacher, la honte qu’elle a d’être
vaincue; Hippoméne la feilit en l’air, dans celle de toutes les attitudes
poffiblcs qui pouvoit peut-être le mieux indiquer une extrême
vélocité; de fes bras il prell'e amoureufement le corps de fon amante,
