animates ftlent Nature, and tranfports us to the very place which the
Artift meant to paint ; for let the Situation he may have chofen or
compofed after Nature be ever so fine , it will ftrike you only in
proportion as the Painter has had the art o f colleBing together the
moft interefting circumftances which make its merit ; has combined them
well, and given them their EffeB , o f all thefe united parts, he will
have , in a manner , made but one fmgle objeB .
A ProfpeB enlightened by the rays o f the riftng Sun , in thofe
moments where nature feems to receive a new life , will lofe a great
deal by receiving them fome hours later , and will appear quite different
towards the middle o f the day or when towards night the objeBs
begin to be mixed and confounded in a manner with Darknefs . Another

fee it enlightened by the fo ft light o f the Moon, when rifing towards
the Meridian she is arrived only at about a third o f her courfe :
then that Majeftick Planet feems to reign over all Nature which it

forms , feeming to render them greater by not having diftinguished

by its motion the tint o f filver’d light , which shining over its whole
furface marks itfelf out more particularly in thofe places, where she feems
to trace an enlightened road on which it refleBs itfelf and receives a
new fplendour . A t the foot o f thofe broken Cliffs , you fee a little
Bafen which the Sea fills ; it brings with it the quiet boats o f the
fatisfied Fishermen who return one after another to divide with their
