Such are the points , which we have hem allé to f i x m regard
to the time , when thefe Vafes in general were made ; there
are others which feem to determine , with fame l in k more prccifton ,
the Antiquity o f fame o f them in particular.
The Monocromate paintings that are upon the Ancient V a fe s ,
and wherein there is no diftindlion o f the Sexes to he feen , may he
trac’d up to the times o f Hygienon , and Dynias : Thofe on tbe^ contrary
, which diftinguish one from the other , ought to he pofterior to
the days o f Cbarmadcs , who was the firft that olferv’d this deftinBton
(2.2) ( qui primus marem foeminaraque difcereverit. )
Eumarus, the Athenian (23), was the f i r f t , who boldly imitated all
the figures ; thus , the Vafa exhibited in the fir ft Volume (24) , where
is T h e feen at once the diftinBion o f the Sexes , and an imitation ,
thd a very coarft one , o f Animals , muft have been in the times ^ o f
Eumarus ; and the Letters he exhibits ; indicate prctly nearly the time,
when this Painter lived , which Pliny has not done.
We have Vafes , whereon are to be feen heads with the faces
in front , or o f three quarters , where articulations faparate the Members
-, Draperies wbofe folds are indicated are alfo remarkable there
; 'They are moft affurcd ly o f a Contury pofterior to that o f C imon
o f Cleonea (25), to whom theft farts o f inventions are owing, hie
catagrapha invenit, obliquas imagines & vari* forraarum vultus re-
fpicientes fufcipientefque vel defpiclentes, articulis membra diftinxit,
venas protulit præterque in vefte rugas & fmus mvemt.
The paintings o f theft Vafes , where there are draperies which
show Nuditys cover’d over again , are pofterior to Polygnotus o f
Tafus ; he lived before the Ninetieth Olympiad ; and was the fir ft ,
who heftow’d tbefe kinds o f drejfes upon the Women , qui primus
mulieres lucida vefte pinxit &c.
I f it is be true , that , Zeuxis o f Hcraclca were the fir ft who
began to paint Moral CharaBers , it muft have preceeded all the
paintings , where the A r t o f thofe expreffions bad heen difplay'd. A nd
thofe in which wc fin d a delicacy in the cbaraBcrs , elegance in the
Hair , and beauty in the Faces , are probably perform’d by Men ,

Les Peintures Monocromates qui font fur les Vafes Anciens, &
dans lesquelles on ne voit pas de diftinélion entre les fexes, doivent
remonter au temps d’Hyglénon & de Dynias : celles au contraire qui
diftinguent l’un de l’autre doivent être poftérieures à celui de Char-
mades qui le premier obferva cette diftinélion (22) {q u i primus marem
fieminamque difcereverit ) .
L Athénien Eumarus (23) ofa le premier imiter toutes les figures;
ainfi le Vafe donné dans le premier Volume, (24) où l’ on voir
à la fois la diftinélion des fexes & f imitation quoique grofliere des
animaux , doit être des temps de ce Peintre ; les lettres qu’ il porte
indiquent à peu près le temps où il a vécu ce que Pline ne
fait pas.
Nous avons des Vafes où l’on voit des têtes de face & de trois
quarts, ou des articulations féparent le membres ; on y remarque aufli
des Draperies dont les plis font indiqués , ils font alfurément d’ un
temps poftérieur à celui de Cimon de Cleonée (2g) à qui l’on doit ces
fortes d’inventions, hic catagrapha inv enit, obliquas imagines & varix for-
marum vultus refpicientes fufcipientefque v e l defpicientes, articulis membra diftin
x it ; venas p r o tu lit, prxterque in vefte rugas & finus in v en it.
Les Peintures de ces Vafes où il y a des draperies qui lailfent
entrevoir le nud qu’elles recouvrent, font poftérieures à Polygnote de
Tafe ; il vivoit avant la quatrevingt dixième Olympiade, & fut le
premier qui donna aux femmes ces fortes d’habillemens : qui primus
mulieres lucida vefte p in x it & c .
S il eft viai que Zeuxis dtîeraclee ait commencé a peindre les
moeurs, il doit avoir précédé toutes les peintures où l’ on a eu fart
de les exprimer ; & celles où l’ on trouve de la fineife dans les ca-
raéteres, de l’élégance dans les cheveux , de la beauté dans les vifages
font vraifemblablement fiiites par des hommes qui en cela avoient
cher-
