means o f giving expreffion and grace as there arc attitudes in that
h a lf , o f which they could make no ufe ; and one muft fin d tt very
extraordinary , that they have neverthelefs , had the art o f ftv in g
very often both the one and the other, in fp ite o f this thorn which
came in their way at each ftop . However upon fame occafions they
■ fr e e d themfelves from this Jlavcry , and by wbat they have done o f
this kind , one may plainly fee that they would have fucceeded very
well in making figures in front , i f they had not been obliged to
facrifice their knowledge to the nature o f the work they had in hand.
Thefe defcBs which muft not be attributed to the Artifts , but to
the material on which they worked , have certainly taken much from
the merit o f tbeir compofitions , which they could not difpofe in the
manner they wished , and which indeed fometimes can not be feen at
one view , bccaufc they furround , and wrap up as one may fay ,
the whole Fafe on which they arc placed ; but on the other band
it muft be acknowledged , that this diftrihution renders theft Vafts very
plcafmg , and makes them produce a great cffcB by the contraft o f
their ftndamental tints ; fo r I believe that the black colour , which
at firft appears fingular , and requires the eyes being accuftom’d to it,
is o f all others the moft proper to f e t o f f the forms and shew the
elegance and purity o f their outline : and J have had occafion to rcmarck
that a Va ft o f a bad form can not bear the black colour ,
nor any dark colour without appearing f t i l l more ridiculous , and on
the contrary that white is o f all the tints the moft proper to hide
the defcBs in the compofition o f the forms.

fes étant néceffairement mifes à côté ou par deffus les unes des autres,
n’ont abfolument pu contribuer toutes également à donner de
la chaleur & du mouvement à l’aélion que le Peintre repréfentoit ;
car, par exemple, comment eût-il fait pour exprimer que le difcours
d’une figure féparée par l’interpofition de fept à huit autres , devoit
s’adreffer à celle que cette pofition f empêchoit de voir ? Et de quel
gefte eût-il pu jamais fe fervir , pour faire parler enfemble deux
perfonnages, dont l’un paroit fur la tête de l’autre, & doit nécefi'ai-
rement occuper cette place pour ne pas laiflér un vuide qu’ il étoit
fait tout exprès pour remplir? Cette difpofition des chofes ayant forcé
à faire prefque toutes les têtes de profil , a tout d’un coup fup-
primé toutes les attitudes que l’on pouvoir trouver en faifant des figures
de trois quarts, de deux tiers, enfin le nombre prefqu’infini de
celles qui peuvent fe trouver entre la moitié & le tout ; c’étoit manifeftement
ôter aux Peintres autant de moyens de donner de l’ expreffion
& de rendre la grace, qu’il y a d’attitudes comptées dans cette
moitié dont ils ne pouvoient pas faire ufage, & l’on doit trouver
extrêmement fingulier qu’ils ayent néanmoins très fouvent eû F habileté
de fiuver Fune & l’autre, malgré cette épine qui les arrêtoit à
chaque pas. Cependant dans quelques occafions ils fe font délivré de
cette fervitude, & par ce qu’ils ont fait en ce genre, on voit clairement
qu’ils auroient très bien réulfi à repréfenter des figures de face,
s’ils n’euffent pas été contraints de facrifier leur favoir à la nature de
fouvrage qu’ils avoient à rendre . Ces défauts qu’il ne faut pas attribuer
aux Artiftes, mais à la matière fur laquelle ils travailloient,
ont fans doute infiniment ôté au mérite de leurs compofitions, qu’ils
n’ont pas été les maitres d’arranger comme ils Feiiffent voulu, & qui
même quelquefois ne peuvent fe voir toutes entières , parce qu’elles
entourent & enveloppent, pour ainfi dire , tout le Vafe fur lequel
elle font placées : mais, d’un autre côté, il faut avouer que cette dif-
tribution rend ces Vafes très agréables, & leur fait produire un grand
effet par le contrafte de fes teintes fondamentales . Car je crois que
cette couleur noire qui à l’abord paroit finguliere & demanderoit des
yeux accoutumés à la voir, eft de toutes celles qu’on pourroit choifir
