fuit Parrhaftus was the firft who painted Ohfeemtys ( libídines) , thofe
we have in this kind eannot afcend higher , than to the time o f the
Ancient Mafter .
Ariftides o f Thebes boldly attempted to exprefs the fenfes, and the
paffions ; omnium primus animum pinxit & fenfus omnes expreffit,
quos vocant Grsci is» , ideft perturbationes . He was contemporary
with Apelles , and we have PiBures which cannot poffibly be anterior
to this Painter.
Since Nicomachus was the firft , who beftow'd a bonnet upon
Uliffics ; hie primus Ulixi addldit Pileum ; where there to be shown
an Ulijfes without a bonnet , we should be in the right to believe,
that , it had heen pamted before the invention o f Nicomachus was
admitted .
The Grilli , which wc shall shew hereafter , being the invention
o f Antyphilus , cannot be anterior to him.
For fear o f being too profufe here I ftop , altbo 1 could
add much more , to what 1 have juft faid : I fpeak no further o f
the different ftilcs remarkable in the paintings , which are fo proper
to prove the time an even the fchools , wherein they were done , as
I shall have occafion to show this hereafter , neverthelefs , there is
ftill another manner , which appears to me very proper to determine
the time of thefe paintings , nor do I believe it ufelefs to call it
to mind here , becaufe that , by comparing together all the methods
we shall follow , and by feeing their conneBions together , we shall
be more qualified , to form a Judgment o f the truth o f the confequences
, they furnish .
Jfodorus teaches in the 35»* Chapter o f his 1 7 '* book, that, Cli-
ftenes chang’d the form o f the Poles o f the Carrs , which ferv’d for
the quadrige , before him they made ufe o f thofe double Poles ,
which Sophocles mentions in his EleBra , Cliftenes reduced them to a

plus avant que le temps de cet Ancien maître.

Puifque Nicomaque donna le premier un Bonnet à Ulilfe ; hic
prmus Ulixi addidit Pileum ; Si nous faifions voir un Ulilfe fans bonnet,
nous ferions on droit de croire qu’ il a été peint, avant qu’ on eût
• admis l’invention de Nicomaque.
Les Grilles que nous montrerons dans la fuite, étant de l’invention
d’Antyphile, ne peuvent lui être antérieurs.
Dans la crainte d’être trop long je m’arrête ici, quoique j’aurois
beaucoup de chofes à joindre à ce que je viens de dire : je ne parle
pas non plus des différens ftiles qu’ on remarque dans les Peintures
que nous donnons, & qui font fi propres à faire connoître le temps
& même les Ecoles où elles ont été faites , comme ]’ aurai occafion
de le faire voir dans la fuite . Cependant il y a encore une autre
maniéré qui me femble très propre à déterminer les temps de ces
Peintures, & je crois qu’il n’eft pas inutile de la rappeller ici, parce
qu’ en comparant enfemble toutes les méthodes que nous fuiverons,
& en voyant comment elles fe rapportent , on fera plus en état de
juger de la vérité des réfultats quelles fourniifent .
Ifidore nous apprend dans le Chapitre trente cinquième de fon
dix fepticme livre que Cliftene changea la forme des Timons des
Chars qui fervoient aux Quadriges ; avant lui on employoit ces doubles
Timons dont Sophocles parle dans fon Eleélre . Cliftene les ré-
duifit à un feul . Nous avons un Vafe dont la Peinture repréfente
ces doubles Timons, il eft donc d’un temps antérieur à celui de Cli-
