infcription , which leaves no room to doubt o f its. having been confecrated
to the Houfchold Gods . I t is in thefe laft fort o f Lariarys
that were confecrated thofe very fmall vafes found of f iv e r , glafs ,
bronzy , clay , and even o f precious ftones , refembling toys that are
now made to arnufe children . I t is probable , that there was a manufiBure
o f Vows , and particularly o f this fort o f Vafes , between
Sorrento and MaJJ'a , where about three years ago , a prodigious quantity
were found , all o f the fame shape , and in the natural colour
o f the clay .
The Ancients refpeBed the Tombs , as well as the Sacred
Buildings , they fometmes offer'd there , Sacrifices to the Manes of
the dead ; thus , it was , that Pirrbus facrifieed Polixenes upon
the Tomb o f Achilles , hut they ftill offner pour’d libations on them,
which were in ftead o f the prayers we fay over the tombs o f our
friends , or Ancefto-rs , they denominated both the one and the other
Ara ; and as ArchiteBure employed the fculls o f ViBtms, and Patera s
to caraBerizy in its ornaments , the Temples o f the Gods , Sculpture
placed upon the Sepulchral Urns , as well as upon the Altars , the
reprefentation o f the Prfferriculum , o f the Sympulum , the Patere ,
and other inftruments o f Sacrifice.
The Ltrufcans , Greeks and Romans had two different cuftoms
with refpeB to their dead , they burnt fome and buried ■ others . The
Ashes o f the firft were carried from the funeral pile into urns , generally
fixed In niches made in the thicknefs o f the walls o f the
Sepulchral Chambers , to which , this arrangement , gave the name o f
Columbaria : The richer fort had their Ashes depofited in urns o f
marble , generally engraved , and fometimes inclofed with lead : The
urns were often placed in Maufoleums like thofe o f Auguftus, Adrian,
and Metella , or in buildings o f different forms , wbofe appartments
were decorated with paintings , ftucco’s , and other ornaments , like the
infide o f the Pyramid o f C . Ceftius , the Tomb o f the Nafo’s , and
thofe 'which we fee at Campana near Pozguolo , in fubterraneous fepulchres
alfo , after the ma-nner o f the Greeks ■ which are 'in this

D ieu x L a r e s . C ’eft dans les Laraires dont je viens de parler qu’étoient
confacrés ces très petits V afe s que l ’on tro u v e en a r g e n t , en v e r r e ,
en b ro n z e , en a r g ille , même en pierres préc ieu fe s, & qui reffemblent
à ces petits meubles qu’on fa it à préfent p ou r amufer les enfans . Il
eft probable q u ’ il y a v o it une manufaélure de voe u x & fu r to u t de
cette forte de Vafes entre Sorriente & M a l f a , où il n’y a pas trois
ans qu’ on en d éco u v r it un nombre p rodig ieu x , q u i tous étoient de
forme femblable & de la couleur naturelle de la te r re .
Les An c iens refpeéloient les T omb eau x comme les édifices fa-
c r é s , quelque fois ils y offroient des facrifices aux mânes des défunts ;
C ’eft ainfi que Pirrus immola Polixêne fur le tombeau d’A c h ille : mais
plus fo u v ent encore ils y répandoient des lib a tio n s , q u i tenoient lieu
des prières que nous faifons fur les Tombes de nos amis ou de nos
ancêtres; c ’eft pou r cela q u ’ils donnèrent égalemept le nom d’A r a aux
autels des D ieu x & aux tombeaux des M o r t s , & comme l’A r c h ite a u r e
emp lo ya des têtes de V iftim e s & des Pateres p o u r ca ra fle r ife r dans fes
ornemens les Tem p le s des D ie u x , la Scu lptu re pla ça fu r les urnes fé-
p u lc ra le s , de même que fur les a u te ls , la repréfentation du Præferricu-
lum , du S im p u lum , de la Patere & des autres inftrumens de Sacrifice .
Les E tru fq u e s , les Grecs & les Romains a vo ien t deux ufages différents
par rap p o r t à leurs morts ; ils brnloient les u n s , ils inhumoient
les autres: les cendres des p rem ie rs, étoient portées du bûcher & dépo-
fées en des Vafes ordinairement enclavés dans des Niches prifes dans
l ’épaiffeur du mur des chambres Sépulcrales , auxquelles cet arrangement
fit donner le nom de C o lum b a r ia . C eu x qui étoient plus riches
faifoient enfermer leurs cendres dans des Urnes de marbre ordinairement
fcu lp té e s , & quelque fols fcellées en plomb : S ou v en t on p la ço it ces
