Vafis : In defcribing every fort o f Painting in ufe in bis time
Pliny fays not a fmgle word o f the Ceramick or Painting on Earth;
which shews fujficiently that it was not known in the Age he wrote.
Perhaps the fecret was loft in the time o f the Romans , as it is
in ours , which was the reafon , that nobody could imitate them ,
and thofe they had at that time , were undoubtedly looked upon ^ as
Ancient Vafes , where rarity was irreparable , which muft have raifed
their value : as to their fingular rarity , here follow fome ohfervations
fufficient alone to prove it , even had we not a f iB mention’d
by an Ancient Author , which leaves us nothing further to
wHb for upon this fu b jeB .
In the excavations o f Herculanum , Pompeii , and Stabia , amidft
o f a number o f Vafes o f a very courfe Earth , which in fpite of
their great delicacy are well preferved , hut they have not difcover d
one painted ; aftonished at a faB that feemed to me almoft incredible
, having an idea , that , thefe Vafes muft have been very common
among the Ancients , I have often examined the refearches made
in different parts by the removals o f the Earth , I faw indeed many
fragments o f Vafes with a black varnish , but not one that indicated
a painted Vafe , which shews , that , at the time thefe Towns
were buried under the Pumice Stones and Ashes o f Vefuvius , that
is at the time o f Pliny’s death , painted Vafes were very rare then,
i f there were any , thd the Vafes o f black varnish , which they made
in Italy , were very common.
The Chriftians introduced at Rome in the reign o f Claudius were
already multiplied exceedingly in the reign o f Vefpafian , it is well
known that above all things they avoided having any thing in common
with the ceremonies o f the Pagans the general fubjeBs o f the
Painted Vafes , one muft then fuppofe , that , either the Chriftians
never made ufe o f them , which is not probable , or that thofe on
which they had painted fome figns o f Chriftianity , as they placed
the monogram o f J . Chrift on their Lamps , have not heen handed
down to us , or in short , that , they no longer painted any in their
time , which is moft likely as ive shall see hereafter .

Peut-être le fecret en é toit il perdu pour les Rom a in s, comme il l’e il
p ou r nous , ce qui eut fa it que perfonne n’eut p u imiter les ou vra ges
peints de cette maniéré & ceux que l ’on con fe rvo it alors fur des
Vafes étoient fans doute regardés comme des monumens anciens dont
la ra re té -n e p o u v o it fe réparer , ce qui devo it en a vo ir hauifé le
p r ix : quant à leur rareté fin gu lie re, v o ic i quelques obfervations qui
fuffiroient p ou r la p r o u v e r , fi nous n’avions d’ailleurs un fa it , qui rapporté
pa r un A u te u r anc ien , lailfe peu à defirer là deffus.
Dans les' excavations faites à H e rcu lan um , à Pompéia & à Stab-
bia parmi un très grand nombre de Vafes d’une terre fo r t commune
qu’on a négligés a v e c r a ifo n , il s’en eft tro u v é quelques-uns, qui malg
ré leur extrême délicatelfe font néanmoins parfaitement bien confervés
, mais on n’y a pas d écouv ert un feul vafe p e in t . Etonné d ’un fait
qui m’a paru prefqu ’in c ro y a b le , v u Vidée où j’étois que ces Vafes dev
o ien t a vo ir été fo r t communs chez les Anciens , j’ ai très fouvent
coiifideré les fouilles & les terres remuées dans tous ces endroits; j’ y
ai reconnu à la v ér ité une très grande qu antité de fragmens de Vafes
verniffés de n o i r , mais pas un feul qui indiquât quelque P e in tu re , ce
qui fa it v o ir c la irem en t, que dans le temps où ces v ille s ont été ren-
v er fé e s , c ’eft à dire dans celui de la mort de P lin e , les Vafes peints
y étoient fo r t rares-, en cas qu’il y en e u t , quoique les V a fe s à v e r nis
noir qu’on fa ifo it en Italie y fuifent très commun s.
Les Chrétiens introduits à Rome fous le regne de Claude y
étoient déjà très multipliés fous l ’Empire de V efpa iien; on fa it q u ’ils
é v ito ien t par deffus to u t , d’a vo ir rien de commun a vec les cérémonies
pa yenne s, que repréfentent la plus p a rt des vafes peints : il faut donc
ftip p o fe r , ou que les Chrétiens ne s’en font jamais fe rv is , ce qui n’eft
pas p ro b a b le , ou que ceux fur lesquels ils auroient fait peindre quelques
fignes du C h r iftian ifm e , comme ils mirent le Man ograme de Jefus
C h r ift fur leurs lampes, ne font pas venus jufqu’à n o u s , ou qu’enfin
