Cave dug into Mount Capitolinus , which ferved at a . retirement to
the Nymph Carmenta , mother o f Evander ; it it o f this Grotto ,
that Ammianus Marccllinus fp ea k s , under the name 0/Habitaculum Nim-
phiE Garment*. The conftruBion alone o f thefe Tomhs showing the moft
diftant times , and being found in the places cited by Suetonius , ought
to be fufficient to prove the Vetuftiffima Sepulcra o f which he fpeaks,
hut what f t i ll further caufes them to approach nearer to thefe , is
th a t ’ there have never been found any fo rt o f Infcriptions , and that
the CharaBers painted upon the Vafes they inclofed , are Grecian;
and that , in fine , they are conftantly without Doors and Windows ,
fo that it is 'abfolutely neceffary to throw them down , fo r Entrance.
In thirteen o f thefe Tombs , which as we shall show prefently
have heen opened exprefsly , there have been difcoverd fome brazen
Vafes o f rather an ordinary Workmanship , and a great many fm all
Earthen Ware Vafes , amongst which there was but one only pamted,
which anfwers exaBly to the exprejfion , aliquantum Vafculorum , o f
our Author .
The Vafe exhibited in the fir ft Volume o f this Work , (20) repre-
fenting a H u n t with Grecian CharaBers , like thofe at Amiclea in a
Temple built hy Eurotas , fifteen hundred years before Jefus C h rift;
a fragment o f the times that preceeded thofe o f Simonides , in fine
feveral other Vafes with infcriptions in Ancient A ttick CharaBers ,
have been difcover'd in the Tombs , like thofe we have juft quoted:
and as it is evident they are o f a very ancient Workmanship in regard
to the Reign o f Julius Cffiar , that moreover, they are found
to he accompanied with the fame circumftances , propofed by Suetonius,
and that at length in all the Tombs difcoverd in the places he
indicates , there are found Vafes , that , apart from this , they are
the moft precious things to be met with in thefe monuments , and
that in fine , there is no difference betveen them , except that in

1 avons dit ailleurs (19) la plus ancienne de toutes. Elle a été pratiquée
dans un antre creufé fous le mont Capitolin ôe qui fervoit de
retraite à la Nymphe Carmenta mere d’Evandre. C’eft de cette grotte
que parle Ammian Marcellin fous le nom d’ Habitaculum Nympha Car-
m en u : la feule conftruéHon de ces Tombeaux anonçant les temps les
plus reculés, & fe trouvant dans les endroits marqués par Suétone,
fuffiroit pour diftinguer les Vetuftiffima Sepulcra dont il parle . Mais
ce qui les rapproche encore davantage de ceux-ci , c’ eft que jamais
on n’y a trouvé aucune forte d’infcriptions, que les caraéleres peints
fur les Vafes qu’ils renfermoient font Grecs, que ces monumens font
conftament fans Portes ni fenêtres, & qu’enfin il faut abfoluraent les
renverfer pour s’y introduire.
Dans treize de ces Tombeaux, qui, comme nous le dirons bientôt,
on été ouverts tout exprès, on a découvert quelques Vafes de bronze
d’un travail alfés groifier & beaucoup de petits Vafes liétiles parmi
lesquels il n’y en avoit qu’un feul qui fut peint ; ce qui répond
exaélement à l’expreflion, aliquantum Vafculorum, d e notre Auteur.
Le Vafe dont nous avons donné la defcription dans le premier
Volume de cet ouvrage (20), & qui repréfente une chalfe avec des ca-
rafleres Grecs tels que ceux qui font à Amiclée dans un Temple bâti
par Eurotas quinze cents ans avant Jefus Chrift , un fragment des
temps qui ont précédés le fiecle où vivoit Simonide , enfin plufieurs
autres Vafes avec des infcriptions en anciens caraéleres Attlques on
été découverts dans des Tombeaux pareils à ceux que nous venons
de citer ; & comme il eft évident qu’ils font d’ un travail très ancien
par rapport au regne de Jule Cefar , que d’ ailleurs ils fe trouvent
avec toutes les circonftances rappellées par Suétone, & que dans tous
les Tombeaux découverts dans les endroits qu’ il indique auprès de
Capoue, on trouve des Vafes qui font alfurément les chofes les plus
précieufes qu’on a placées dans ces Monumens, & qu’enfin ils ne différent
les uns des autres , qu’ en ce que leurs peintures font meilleurs
