In order to get at this comparifon, i shall on the one hand give the
tokens hy which one may know the tombs mentioned by this Author ,
and on the other hand the figns , which charaBerKe principally fome
o f thofe , which have heen difcovered in the very places be points

Thefe Tombs fays Suetonius '¡siere found in the territory o f Capua
, where they were building Country Houfes ; they were very ancient
adds he , Vetu iliffim a , even with refpeB to Cffars time . I t
is known , that , the moft ancient tombs , as thofe o f (Enomaus and
Endymion , that were feen in the Stadium o f Olympia , all thofe of
the Heroick Ages mention’d by Paufanias , in short that o f Thefeus
which Cimon {according to Plutarch) difcovered in the Ifland o f Sch>-
ros , were without any infcriptions , fo that , it was by tradition ,
that the names of the perfons they contained were known.
They found, fays Suetonius , { 16 ) in the Monument, which was faid
to be that o f Capys the founder o f Capua a plate o f brafs , on
which were written thefe words in Greek CharaBers ; when the bones
o f Capys shall be difcovered , one of the deftendants o f Julius will
he kill’d by his relations , and foon great evils will befall Italy .
As all this is a prophecy , and o f courfe a falfity adapted to the
events which followed the death o f Julius Cdfar , it is evident ,
that , this infcription could not have been found in the tomb where
it was fuppofed to have been difcoverd . And i f they had taken out
any thing that pointed out clearly the perfon to whom it belonged ,
Suetonius vould have faid pofitively , that , it was' the Tomb of
Capys , and not that faid to have been fo . I t muft be concluded
from his narrative , that they meet with no infcription in this monunument
, which juftified the common opinion , and that fome o f thefe
tombs were manifeftly without infcriptions , which affords us ftill another
fign , by which we may diftinguish thofe o f that time.

on peut reconnoître les Tombeaux dont parle cet A u te u r , &
de 1 autre les fignes qui caraêlérifent fpécialement quelques-uns de ceux
que 1 on d écouvre dans les endroits mêmes qu’il in d iq u e .
Ces T om b e au x , d it S u é to ne , fe trou voient dans le territoire de
Capoue ou Io n con ftruiibit des maifons de campagne; ils é to ien t , ajou-
te -t-il, très antiques Fetuftijfma, même par rap p o r t au temps de Jule
C e fa r . O n fait que les tombeaux les plus anciens, comme ceux d’E n o -
maus & d’Endymion q u ’on v o y o it dans le ftade d ’O lym p ie , tous ceux
des temps héroïques dont Paufanias fa it m en tio n , enfin celui de Thé-
fée que C im o n , au rap p o r t d e P lu ta rq u e , d écouv rit dans l ’isle de Schi-
ros etoient fans aucune infcription ; de for te que c’é toit pa r tradition
que l ’on connoiifoit les noms de ceux qu’ils ren fe rm o ien t.
O n t ro u v a , dit le même A u t e u r , dans le monument q u ’on difoit
être celui de Cap y s fondateur de C a p o u e , une lame d ’airain fur laquelle
étoient écrits ces mots en langue & en caraéleres Grecs : ” lo rqu ’on
„ découv rira les os de C a p y s , un des defcendants de Jule fera tu é par
„ fes p ro ch e s , & bientôt il a rriv e ra de grands maux à l ’I t a l ie . C om me
tou t ceci eft une Prophétie & p a r conféquent une faulfeté ajuftée
aux événemens qui fiiivirent la mort de Jule C é fa r , il eft évident que
cette in fc ription n’a pû fe trou v er dans le Tomb eau ou l ’ on fuppo-
fo it l’a vo ir d é c o u v e r te , & com me , fi l’on en eut tiré quelque chofe
q u i marquât clairement à qui il a p p a r ten o it, Suétone diroit poütive-
ment que c’é to it le Tomb eau de C a p y s , & non pas celui qu’on difoit
être le Tomb eau de C a p y s , on d oit conclure de fa n a r ra tion , qu’on
n’a v o it rencontré dans ce monument aucune infcription qui jiiftifiât
l ’opinion commune, & que quelques-uns de ces Tombeaux étoient manifeftement
fans in fc r ip tion s , ce qui nous donne encore un figne auquel
nous pouvons reconnoître ceux de ces temps là .
Cependant , comme tous les bruits évidemment abfurdes , tels
que celui de cette d é c o u v e r te , fon t toujours accompagnés de circonftances,
qui s’accordant a v e c les ufages connus fe rv en t à les rendre
