The difcoveries made within thefe twenty years in Campania ,
have given us an opportunity o f feeing many Vafes o f different shapes
, belonging to the publick or private baths ; there are fome ,
which faften’d to a bragen ringh with ftrygils , muft have neceffarily
been made ufe o f with them , and one may diftinguish the Unguentarium
defigrid to hold the effences , the Ancients made ufe o f after
bathing , and Patera’s which ferved to throw water over the body,
whilft they employed the Strygil or Scraper . Thefe known forms leave
no room to doubt o f the deftination o f the earthen ware Vafes which
are exaHly o f the fame shape , and with what has been faid before ,
prove , that Naples is perhaps , o f all the Cities in Europe , that ,
which affords the greateft helps for writing upon the fubjeBs I have
undertaken to explain.
A Pajfage from Ariftodemus , preferved by Atheneus , teaches us,
that upon the road from Schiroos to ' Eletifis , they trained their youth
to run from the temple of Bacchus to that of Minerva Schirrana ,
the conqueror received , inftead o f a Crown , a fort o f Cup called
Pentaploe : ' this cuftom o f giving prices to thofe who fucceeded heft

this leaves no doubt hut that , thefe were given by particular towns,
who favour’d the Gymnaftick Exercifes , and the more so , as all
were ambitious o f feeing their fellow Citizens gain the Crown at
Olympia , at Corinth or Delphos , where they celebrated the Pythian
Games . This Ambition was carried so far , that , according to Paufanias
, the town o f Agrigentum in Sicily offer’d to pay a very
confiderable fum to a Wreftler , who had been crown’d , provided he
would fay he was their Citffen .

U n patfage d’ A riftodêm e confervé par A th éné e , nous apprend
que fu r le chemin de Schiroos à Eléu fis , on exercoit les jeunes gens
à courir depuis le T em p le de Bacchus jufqu’à celui de M in e rv e Schir-
ra n e , le v ainqueur recevoir au lieu de couronne une forte de C a lic e
appellé Pentaploé ; cet ufage de donner des p r ix à ceux qui réuflif-
foient le mieux dans les exercices publics, fe prouv e encore pa r un
paifage de Sophocle & pa r diverfes pierres g ra v é e s , car on en v o it

table fur lesquelles il y a des Vafes de formes femblables à celles que
