Ij , that the too great variety o f PiBures , and perhaps the manner
o f difpofmg them one above another, deftroy in great meafure their effeB
, as the difference o f hands , Jiiles , and the continual change of
SubjeBs , tire at laft and quite wear out the attention , that ought
to be managed . The Attention divided among a great number o f objeBs
, has not time to fettle upon any one , by which means a curious
’ perfon rarely fixing to one piece , can have time to be acquainted
with all the beauties it contains, and which by amufmg him would
have given him a love for an Art from which he could draw both
pleafure and inftruBion ; Hence it happens that inftead o f acquiring a
tafte for Painting , he loofes that which he could wish to have bad
for i t , and ends by wondering how any body can be amufed with what
appears to him so tirefome ; this it is that leads me to think , that
thefe Galleries o f PiBures may not be produBive o f that utility and
pleajure to every body, as to Connoffeurs and Artifts ; for it is certain
that it is only thofe who have a precife knowledge , that can
make juft diftinBions ; I should be glad to know then, o f what ufe
thefe colieBions are to thofe who cannot diftinguish the good from the
middling , and who often deceived by great Names, would imagine they
were in an error i f they did not admire fome produBions, which being
fometimes the early ones o f an artift , and therefore not the more valuable
for being b is , and are only the firft ejfays o f the Art which
gave him reputation . But to fpeak my mind fairly upon the greateft
part o f the ColleBions which I have feen , it appears to m e , that a
middling piBure gains by being in a CoUeBion , becaufe loft in the
croud , it is fure o f being lefs feen and o f courfe lefs criticifed, when
on the other band a good one which would gain upon a clofer examination
, muft neceffarily loofe, by having that attention which was due
to it alone, divided among many others . I would therefore advife thofe
who are defirous o f cultivating their rifimg tafte for Painting , to aim
lefs at feeing much , than at feeing well ; to be perfuaded that the
reputation o f many painters is much beneath their merit , and to hold
it as a certain maxim , that , at leaft in point o f Compofition , i f
they will eonfult their own opinion and form their judgement upon that
alone

de là que loin de prendre du goû t pour la Peinture , il perd celui
q u ’il eût defiré a v o ir pa r e l l e , & finit par ne p o u v o ir com p ren dre ,
comment on peut s’amufer d’ une chofe qui lu i p a roit fi ennuyenfe .
C ’eft ce qui me por te à p en fe r , que ces Galeries pourroient bien n’av
o ir pas pour tou t le mond e , le même agrément & la même u tilité
q u e lle s ont p ou r les connoiffeurs & pour les A r tlfte s ; car il eft certain
, que ceux-là feuls qui ont des connoiffances précifes peuvent
faire des diftinélions juftes ; O r je demande à quoi peuvent fe rv ir
ces colleétions, p ou r ceux qui ne font pas en état de diftinguer le
bon du médiocre , & qui fou v ent trompés par des noms fameux ,
penferoient se méprendre , en n’admirant pas des chofes , qui étant
fou v ent des commenceraens d’un A r t i f t e , n’en v a illen t pas mieux pour
être de lu i , & ne font que des effays de l ’ a r t , qui lu i a donné
de la réputation . M ais pour dire toiit-à-fait mon fentiment fur la
plus p a rt des C o lle flion s que j’ai vues , il me femble q u ’un tableau
médiocre gagne beaucoup à s 'y trou v er renfermé , parcequ étant confondu
dans la fo u le , il eft affuré d’ê tre moins v u & par conféquent
moins c r itiq u é : au lieu qu’ un bon o u v ra g e à qui il eft a vantageux
d’être con fid é ré , doit néceffairement p e rd r e , en partageant a vec beaucoup
d’autres l ’attention qu’il m ér ito it toute entiere . Fondé fur ces
réflexions, je confeillerois donc à ceux qui voud ro ien t cu ltiv e r le goû t
naiffant qu’ils ont p ou r la P e in tu re , de s’a tta cher moins à v o ir beauc
o u p , qu’à bien v o i r ; d’être perfuadés que la réputa tion de bien des
Peintres eft fo r t au deffus de leur m é r ite , & de se tenir pou r certains
q u ’au moins en fait de com p o fition , s’ils ne v eu illen t confulter que leur
p rop re fentiment & n’apprécier les chofes que d’après lu i , ils jugeront
