vihat is the fame thing , in the two hundred and fifty years before
the foundation o f Rome , that one muft place Cimon o f Cleonea,
who firft underftood the art o f foreshortning and varied the ^ attitudes
o f the head as occafion required , who marked the articulations , the
veins, and know the manner o f throwing his draperies, and o f expref-
fing the folds .■ he follow d , fays Pliny , the foot fteps o f Eumarus
who firft began to diftinguish the fexes , and painted all forts o f f i gures
. This Eumarus was evidently anteriour to the painting o f the
boar hunt which we have given , for we fee theft animals and the
f i x is very evidently marked in the Hunters . I t is then between
the fpace o f time when this Fafe was made and the time o f Euchir
that we muft place Eumarus and thofe who painted Monochramates
fuch as Cleantes , Hygiemon , Dinias and Charmades . In allowing
o n l y fifty years between the fragment and the Vafe we have compared
with it , it would be o f about fifty before Cimon and three
hundred years before Romulus or Bularche who lived in his time, and
o f a hundred and thirty eight after Euchirus . th e little progrefs
the art had made shew plainly that this fpace is not too extenfive,
and as there is perhaps a much greater difference between the painting
o f Elotas and that o f the hunt, than there is between the latter
and that o f Euchirus , there muft alfo have been a much greater
interval between thofe times , which according to my calculation should
be fomething more than the double.
Euchirus who - invented painting was contemporary with Thefeus
who lived about twelve hundred and fourteen years before the Vulgar
jEra ; being related to Dedalus, he muft have been likewife to Talus
to whom we owe the Potters Wheel . I am going to give here a
fingular monument (37) which feems to unite the art o f thefe three -
Artifts . I t is a Vafe whofe form is o f all thofe that we have, the
eaficft for execution , yet in that very point it is wanting , which
being never fien in theft fort o f works feems to mark the infancy
of

precedent la fondation de Rome qu’il faut placer Cimon de Cléonée,
qui le premier connût les raccourcis, & varia les airs de tête ièlon
le befom qu’il en avoit, qui marqua les articulations, les veines &
connût la maniéré de jetter les draperies, & d’en rendre les plis. Il
finvit , dit Pline ., les traces d’Eumarus qui le premier diftlngua les
fexes & peignit toutes fortes de figures. Cet Eumarus étoit évidemment
antérieur à la Peinture de la Chalfe que nous avons rapportée;
car on y voit des Animaux, & le Sexe eft très bien marqué dans les
Chalfeiirs Ceft donc entre fefpace du temps où a été fait ce Vafe,
& celui d Euchir qu’il faut ranger Eumarus & ceux qui ont peint les
Monochromates, comme Cléantes, Hygiéraon, Dinias & Charmades.
En ne mettant que cinquante ans de diftance entre le fragment dont
nous avons parlé, & le Vafe que nous lui avons comparé, il feroit
d’environ cinquante avant Cimon & trois cent ans avant Romulus ou
Bularche qui vivoit de fon temps, c’eft-à-dire, cent trente huit après
Euchir. Le peu de progrès que fart avoit fait, montre alfurément que
cet efpace neft pas trop étendu, & comme il y a certainement bien
plus de différence entre la Peinture d’Elotas & celle d’Euchir, il doit
auffi y avoir un beaucoup plus grand intervalle entre ces temps, qui,
felon mon opinion, fe trouve être d’un peu plus du double.
Euchir qui inventa la Peinture étoit contemporain de Théfée qui
vivoit environ douze cent quatorze ans avant l’Ere vulgaire; comme
parent de Dédale il l’étoit par conféquent de Talus auquel nous devons
le Tour a Potier. Je vais donner ici un monument fingulier (37)
qui femble réunir l’art de ces trois Artiftes . C’eft un Vafe dont la
forme eft de toutes celles que nous avons la plus facile à rendre, &
qui malgré cela manque du côté de l’exécution ; ce qui ne fe voyant
jamais dans ces fortes d’ouvrages femble marquer renfknce de l’art de
Talus : on ignoroit alors la façon de placer la teinte jaune fous la noire
ce qui paroit annoncer un temps antérieur à celui de Dibutades ; enfin
les figures qui font exécutées à la maniéré d’Euchir, ont précédées la
Peinture linéaire, car le fond en eft fait avec les contours, & pour
indiquer quelques parties on s’eft fervi de la Hampe du Pinceau même,
parce qu’ on ne favoit pas faire des traits avec la pointe - enfin
