matter , hut the Workmanship , which gave them their Value : bejides,
i , is the fame , which Suetonius employs , in dijlinguishing the Paintings
o f the Ancient Mafters , and as he fays elfewhere , (l8)^ Tabillas

may be underftood thereby that be meant to fpeak o f Vafes , as wel
as o f PiBures Anciently printed , which would decide the queftion :
but , without infifting upon this Analogy in terms , which in other
refpeBs would be attended with fome difficulty , 1 shall be fatisfied hy
obferving , that , by what has been juft now fuggefted, vie have right
circumftances ftrongly denoted , which pu t us in a fa ir way o f knowing
the Ancient Tombs , which have been faught after , in the adjacencies
o f Capua , and o f comparing them with th o fe , that are found
at prefent in the fame p lac e s .
Experience shows , that , between ancient Capua , Nola , Caiaz-
zp which is the Calatia o f the Ancients , and the Vulturnus , there
are difcoverd a pretty large quantity o f Ancient Tombs o f very different
conftruBions : fome elevated out o f the ground , have Walls
made o f Bricks or Stones o f a midling f iz e ; there are fome , whofe
Courfes are interupted by layers o f Bricks , and often there are to be
feen others , wherein has been employ’d that fort o f work in Mofaick
, which Vitruvius calls R e ticu le , becaufe it has the form o f
Netting ; this Work was introduc’d in Rome towards the end o f the
Republick , and all thefe Tombs are evidently Roman , as may be
prov’d hy the infcriptions taken from thence , and difperfed amongst
the ColleBions , made upon thofe forts o f Matters ; I t is then evident
, that it is not o f th o fe , that Suetonius means to fp e a k , becaufe
they are either near or pofterior to the time o f Julius C ffia r.
Some o f thefe Tombs are interr’d after the manner o f the Grecians
, and conftruBed without any mortar , with large blocks o f Stone
that fcarcely two mules could draw : T h u s , were built the walls
o f Tirynthe , a City ruin’d by the Argiens , and alfo the Gate o f the
Ancient Mycenes which pafted fo r the Work o f the Cyclops ; This
manner o f building , originaly o f the Etrufcans , is , as we have find
elfewhere,

it entendre pa r là des Vafes comme des Tableaux anciennement
peints , ce q u i décideroit la queftion ; mais fans infiller fur cette
analogie dans les termes qui ne feroit pas d’ ailleurs fans difficulté ,
je me contenterai d’o b fe rv e r , que par ce qui v ien t d’être e xp o fé , nous
avons h uit circonftances bien marquées qui nous mettent à portée de
connoître les anciens Tombeaux que l’on chercho it dans les environs
de C a p o u e , & de leur comparer ceux qu’on tro u v e encore à préfent
dans les mêmes en dro its.
L ’expérience montre q u ’entre l ’ancienne C a p o u e , N o la , C a ia zzo
qui eft la Ca la tia des anciens & le V u lti irn e , on découvre une alfez
grande quantité de tombeaux antiques qui font de conftruêiions fo r t
différentes ; les uns élevés hors de terre ont des murs faits de briques
ou de pierres dont la grandeur eft médiocre ; il y en a dont les af-
fifes font interrompues pa r des cours de briqu e s, & fouv ent on en
v o it dans lesquels on a emp loyé cette efpece d’ou vrage en Alofaïqu e
que V it ru v e appelle R é ticulé , parcequ’il a la forme de R e fe a u . Ce tte
maniéré de conftruire s’introduiiit à Rome vers la fin de la Rép u b lique
, & tous ces tombeaux font évidemment Romains , comme le
prouvent les infcriptions qu’on en a tiré e s , & qui font répandues dans
les recueils faits fu r ces fortes de matières . I l eft donc évident que
ce n’eft pas d’eux que Suétone entend p a r le r , fous la dénomination de
Vetuftiffima Sepulcra , car ils font ou voifins ou poftérieurs au temps
de Jule C é fa r .
Quelques-uns de ces Tombeaux enterrés à la maniéré des Grecs,
font conftruits fans aucun m o r t ie r , a vec des gros quartiers de pierre
q u ’à peine deux mulets pourroient traîner ; C ’eft ainfi qu’étoient
bâtis les murs de T i r y n th e , V ille ruinée pa r les A r g ie n s , & la por te
de f ancienne My cen es qui palfoit pour f ou vrage des C y c lop e s .
Ce tte forte de fabrique originaire des Etrufques eft , comme nous
