o f the art o f Talus , they were at that time ignorant o f the manner
o f Placing the yellow tint under the Hack , which feems to point
out a time anteriour to 'Dihutades , laftly the figures which are painted
in Euchirus s manner , have preceeded the lineal fainting , fo r the
ground o f it is made- with the outlines , and to , mark fome parts
"they have made ufe o f the wrong end o f the pencil not knowing
how to make the lines with the point : the ornaments roughly drawn
upon this Vafe , and which arc o f the fo rt which wc call a a
Grecque , reprefent thofe fo rt o f Labyrinths , which they pretend that
Dedalus invented , and which one fees engraved upon fome ancient
ftones . However barba-rous this monument may he , it is ncvertbelejs
very Interefting and Curious , fince on O'ne hand it shews the h ju n cy
or as one may the Cradle o f the A r t , and on the other s kw s us
in the clea-reft manner a commerce between the Artifts o f Great a-nd
L ittle Grece which continues without interruption from the beginning o f
painting t ill the time that the former fuhmitted to the Romans . For
as from the ornaments we have been fpeaking o f , one difcovers the
t-races o f that commerce from the time o f Euchir down to the Reign
o f Romulus fo , many other monuments o f the fame nature shew its
continuance from the reign o f that Prince t ill the deftruBion o f the
manufaBures o f Capua . On a fine Cup made in the manufaBures o f
Campania , and published hy M ' Magoechi (38) , he has remarked the
ancient cbaraBcrs made ufe o f in Attica about f iv e hundred years before
our Era , this Cup then , and the painting with which ,t n
adorned , muft belong to the time when thefe cbaraBcrs were m ufe
among the G-reeks , juft as a little Vafe which I defcribe , muft be
pofteriour to Alexander , and confcqucntly near the and o f the Arts ,
fincc the letters on ' it arc the fa-me that were made ufe o f after the
Reign o f that Conqueror . One can then by the means o f a ColleBion
o f a-ntiquc Vafes shew the whole progrefs o f Painting from its beginning
to its fa ll : fo r it muft be re-marked that not only thofe they
executed in Clay , hut even thofe they made on Wood , or by the
means o f fire , were quite degenerated towiards the end o f the age
which follow’d the death o f Alexander, and as the monuments on which

les A r tlfte s de la Grande & de la Petite G rece un commerce qui
continua fans interruption depuis le commencement de la Peinture jufqu
au temps où toute l ’Italie fu t foumife aux R om a in s . C a r de même
que p a r les monumens dont nous avons parlé ci delfus, on découvre
des traces de ce commerce depuis E u chir , jufques vers le Regne de
Romulus , ainfi plufieurs autres monumens du même genre en montren
t la fuite dans 1 efpace qui s’écoula depuis la mort de ce Prince
jufques à la d e ftru a ion des M an u fad u re s de C ap ou e . Sur une belle

fA t t iq u e environ cinq cent ans a vant notre Ere , il faut donc que
cette C o up e & la Peinture dont elle eft ornée , appartienent aux
temps où ces caraderes étoient en ufage chez les Grecs ; Comm e il

les Peintures que l ’on exé cu toit en te r re , mais même celles que l ’on
fa ifo it fur des Tables , ou p a r le moyen du feu , étoient totalement
dégénérées vers la fin du fiecle qui fu iv it la mort d’ Alexandre , &
comme les monumens fu r lesquels nous fondons nos recherches ap’par-
tiennent à des Epoques différentes qui font déterminées par les lettrès
