and feparated by the vaft Ocean , have now a communication , and,
as one may fay , are joined to each other ; people o f different Manners
, Characters , and Genius have learnt to know one another , and
conneSlei themfelves together. The produBions o f the Burning Sands under
the Line have been carried even to the Frigid Z o n e ; the Riches
o f all Countries, become publick , have been equally fcatterd over every
part o f the Globe , which we inhabit ; in short , the World it-
f e l f is no longer confidered , but , as a Country in common , to so
many Nations labouring one for the other, and contributing without their
knowing it , to the publick W ea l.
Writing has caufed in the Moral World , revolutions like thofe
, which Navigation has produced in the Phyftcal World ; preferving
the ideas o f all Ages , it has tranfported thofe conceived upon the
banks o f the Ganges, the Nile , and the Alphius , to the once unknown
shores o f a new Continent ; A t the foot o f the Cordilliers , in
thofe Countries governed by Inca’s , who imagined themfelves defcended from
the Sun , the Pbilofophy, and the Errors o f Ancient Greece are in thefe
days known , as well as that little we comprehend o f the obfcure
DoBrine o f the Ancient Egyptians, and o f the Laws given to the Perfians
by Zoroafter . Every mind is in fome meafure become cotemporary
; and times , ftopped as it were in their progrejfion , feem to be
reunited.
Painting , by a fort o f enchantment , natural to it , has gone ftill
further ; it has not only like Writing , preferved the Thoughts o f men;
b u t, has found the means o f fixing the Lineaments o f their Figures, which
death effaces for ever; o f their Pajfions, which from their nature are of
short duration; o f their ABions, which time buries in the general oblivion
o f things pafted ; and o f perpetuating even the AffeBions , and the
fmalleft Emotions o f the Soul . And , as by Navigation, we tranfport
ourfelves into Climates entirely oppofite to thefe we inhabit, and have
communication with men , whom nature feemed to have feperated from
us for ever ; so , by Painting , we live in the times, and with the

roaftre donna aux Perfes ; tous les efprits font eii quelque manière
devenus contemporains, & les temps comme arrêtés dans leur progref-
fion femblent s’être réunis.
Par une forte d’enchantement qui lui eft p r o p r e , la Peinture en
fu iv an t une route différente eft encore allé plus loin . A in fi que
l ’E criture , elle a non feulement confervé les penfées des hommes ,
mais elle a encore tro u v é le moyen de fixer les traits de leur F igu re
, que la mort fait d ifpa roître p ou r toujours , leurs Paffions qui
de leur nature font peu durables , leurs A d io n s , que le temps enfe-
v e l it dans l’oubli commun des chofes palTées , & de perpétuer avec
leurs A ffed ion s , jufqu’ aux moindres mouvemens de leur ame . Et
comme par la N a v ig a tio n nous nous tranfportons en des Climats
tou t oppofés à ceux que nous cultivons , & nous traitons avec des
