Cn. Manlius , Lueullus , and Pompey carried with them into R o me
, the tafte fo r the Murrhine Vafes ; and that which they had
already for thofe o f Corinth , o f Delos , and in general fo r all thof
e things o f precious Value , caus’d the earthen Ware Vafes to be
foon forgot , they began to be negleBed , and in a short time were
'deftroy’d gradunly ; I t feems that , the lofs o f them were not regretted
, till there was no pojfibility o f procuring any more : I t was
probably , the difcovery o f fome few o f theft Vafes in the tombs o f
Capua , which pu t them again in Credit , during the whole following
Century .
The R e fu lt is , that there are to be difcoverd 4. or g. Epochs
o f the Hiftory o f the Ceramick in Italy ; The fir ft , which according
to the progrefs o f all things , muft have been fu b jeB to the
Imbecility o f the A r t in its Infancy , is almoft determind by the
Vafe o f the Hunt ( 2 1 ) which we shall foon demonftrate to have been
anterior by fome Century’s to the foundation o f Rome : The fécond ,
wherein the A r t was carried to ' its perfeBion preceeded the taking o f
Capua ; The third , when the painting o f Vafes was le ft o j f , falls
out about the time o f the taking o f Corinth : In the 4 J which
f t i l l exifted under Vefpafian , the ManufaBures o f Vafes were no longer
recommcndable , but merely for tbeir Shapes . This Epoch feems
to have been foon follow’d by the g'* , which announc’d the total decadency
o f the A r t , began towards the Reign o f Trajan , and arriv’d
at its laft period , about the time o f the Antonincs , and Septimius
Severus : I t was then that Atheneus was writing bis Works:
the Ceramick was fo difgrac’d in his t im e , that in the book he compos’d
upon the Vafes o f the Ancients , he has not even comlefcended,
to make mention o f one fitngle ManufaBure exifting in Italy .
Such
fes du Pont, de f Arménie & de f Afie . Cn. Manlius, Luciillus &
Pompée apportèrent dans Rome le goût des Vafes MuiTliins & celui
qu’on avoit déjà pour ceux de Corinthe, de Délos & en général pour
les chofes précieufes faifant bientôt oublier les Vafes fiéliles, on commença
par les négliger & bientôt ils fe détruifirent peu à peu . Il
paroit qu’on ne vint à les regretter que lorfqu’il ne fût plus poffible
de s en procurer , & que ce fût vraifemblablement la découverte de
quelques-uns de ces Vafes dans les Tombeaux de Capoue, qui les remit
en crédit pendant tout le fiecle fuivant.
Il refulte de tout ceci , qu’ on peut entrevoir quatre ou cinq
Epoques dans l’hiftoire de la Céramique en Italie. La premiere, qui
felon la marche de toutes les chofes, a du fe relfentir de la foiblelfe
& de f enfance de fart, eft prefque déterminée par le Vafe de la
Chalfe (21) que nous montrerons bientôt devoir être antérieur de
quelques fiecles à la fondation de Rome ; La fécondé où l’art a été
porté à fa perfeaion a précédé la prife de Capoue ; la troifieme ou
l’on celfa de peindre les Vafes tombe vers le temps de la prife de Corinthe;
dans la quatrième qui exiftoit encore fous Vefpafien, les ma-
nufaftures de Vafes n’étoient plus recommendables que par les formes
qu’elles leur donnoient. Cette Epoque paroit avoir été bientôt fui-
vie de la cinquième qui annonce la totale décadence de l’art, commencée
vers le regne Trajan & arrivée à fon dernier période vers
celui des Antonins & de Septime Severe : c’ eft alors qu’Athénée
écrivoit fes ouvrages ; la Céramique étoit tellement avilie de fon
temps que dans le livre qu’il a fait fur les Vafes de Anciens, il n’a
pas même daigné faire mention d’ une feule manufaélure exiftante en
Italie.
Tels font les points qu’il nous a été poffible de fixer fur le temps
où ces Vafes en général ont été faits; en voici d’autres qui femblent
déterminer avec un peu-plus de précifion l’antiquité de quelques-uns
en particulier.
