The universality o f this practise, which prevails
among savages in all parts o f the world from the
remotest limits o f North America to the islands in the
South Seas, and which probably differs but little from
the method o f staining the body that was in use among
the ancient inhabitants o f Britain, is a curious subject
o f speculation,
