PÆ O N IA . Calyx 5-sepaius, sepalis subfoliaceis inæqua-
libns orbiculatis persistentibus. Pétala 5 (interdum 6-10)
orbicularia subæqualia ungue destituía. Stamina plures, antheris
introrsis; discus caruosus ovaria cingens; ovario. 2-5
grossa; stigmata sessilia crassa falcata bilamellata crispa;
capsula (folliculive) 2-5, ovatoe, apice stigmate superatæ,
1-locuIares, polyspermæ, sutura longitudinali superne dehiscentes.
Semina subglobosa nitida; umbilicus promiuulus ;
albumen carnosum; embryo in basi locatus.
Herbæ aut rarius snlfrutices ; radices perennes collo crasso
suhhorìzontali, fibris fasciculatis extus nigricantibus aut omnibus
aut aliis cylindricis, alteris in tubérculo ovata cylindraceave
incrassatis ; vaginæ squamosa ad basim caulis ; gemmæ radicales
squamis petiolaribus constantes; folia alterna petiolata
bis ternatim secta ; flores terminales, ampli, purpurei rosei aut
