basi orbiculari, peltata, persistente ; limbo quinquefido, sæpe
irreffulari Corolla infundibuliformis ; limbo plicato, ungulato,
quinque-aut decemdentato. Stamina 5, subinclusa. Anthera
longitudinaliter dehiscentes. Stylus ongitudine stammum.
Stigma bilobum. Capsula semiquadriloculans quadrivalvis,
sæpius muricato-spinosa ; placente discrete. 6 emm« crebra
reniformia. Herbæ virosa, rarius arhuscula aut frútices.

Annual, smooth. Stem erect, from a foot to 18 inches
in height, purple, spotted with small light spots,
branching; branches spreading, purple, also spotted.
Leaves ovate, acute, lower ones cordate, sinuate, or
deeply and sharply toothed ; u p p r ones oblique at
the base nerves purple. Petioles purple, flattened
and furrowed on the upper side, and convex on the
lower shorter than the leaves. Peduncles shovi. Calyx
