
 
        
         
		This  fpeci'es  is  found  at Pondicherry,  in  the  Eajt  Indies.  It  is'  
 held  as  a  facred  bird,  and worfhlpped in  confequence,  by  the  natives  
 on  the  coaft of Malabar.

 nr HI S  is  a  large  bird,,  faid  to  be  o f  the  fize  o f   the  Golden  
 "*■   Eagle.  The  bill  is  black :  cere yellow  :  head,  hind  part  o f   
 the  neck,, belly,-and  wing  coverts,  are  ferruginous  :  the  fore  part  
 o f  the  neck,  breaft,. back,  and  quills,  are  black :  bafe  of the  tail,,  
 to  the middle,  is white;  the  end  half black:  legs  yellow,  covered-  
 to  the  toes with  ferruginous  feathers:  claws  bla ck.

 rpH'E  fize  is  equal  to  an  Ofprey,. and  not. much  unlike  that:  
 b ird ;  but  the  limbs  are  longer 5  it  expands  fix  feet,  and:  
 weighs,nearly  fix pounds. The bill  is  ftrait  at  the bafe:  cere  o f  at  
 livid  afh-colour:  irides grey brown, with  a black outer circle:  the-  
 head  is  grey brown,  with  a- triangular white  fpot  on'  the  crown:  
 throat  white:  fides  of-the  head: darker  than  the  reft  (as  in  the  
 Ofprey)':  the upper part o f   the  body  is-of a  clouded  brown  colour; 
   the  parts  beneath,  the  fame,  but  paler:  fecond  coverts.;  
 have grey  margins  :  quills  very  dark:  tail  longifh,  even  at  the  
 end,  black  at  the  tip,  and  white  beneath;  fame  o f   the  fide—  
 feathers  are  dotted  within, with  white:,  the  legs  are  pale;  onethird! 
 third  of the  fliins  covered with feathers :  claws  large,  black:  no  
 membrane  between  the  toes. 
 This bird  frequents  the more  fouthern  parts  of the Jaick.

 n pH E   lize  is  not mentioned;  but  by  the  name Eagle,  it  cannot  
 be  very  finall.  The  bill  is  black:  cere  and  fides  of  the  
 bill  luteous  :  eye-lids  blue :  iris  lurid :  head,  neck,  and  back, o f   
 an  obfcure ferruginous  brown,  here  and  there mixed with  a  little  
 white :  the pofterior  and  inferior  lides  of the  quills  fpotted with  
 grey;  the  tips  of the fourth,  fifth,  fixth,  and  feventh,  black;  the  
 reft  undulated,  with  rufous  tips :  wings  reach  almoft  to  the  end  
 of the  tail:  the  under  parts  are  the  fame  colour  as  thofe  above»  
 but without  any  mixture  of  white :  greater wing-coverts  brown,  
 with  ferruginous  tips ;  lefier  coverts  half  brown  half  rufous :  
 tail  black,  with  grey  bands;  the  tips  rufous :  the  legs  are  feathered  
 to  the  claws,  like  to  thofe of fome  kinds  of owlsj  they  
 are of a luteous  colour, with  black  claws. 
 Inhabits  Ruffia,  along with N° 46,  and  often  feen with  it  near  
 the  city of 'Tfcbercajk. 
 T H E  length  of  this  lpecies  is  twenty-one  inches ;  breadth  
 three  feet  and  a half.  The  bill  is  of  a  pale  colour,  with  a  
 black  tip  :  the  head,  neck as  far  as  the  breaft,  and  the  upper  
 part of  the  body,  dark  brown,  inclining  to  black :  fcapulars  and  
 wing-coverts  chocolate  brown;  the  bafe  and  margin  of each  fea-
