Gen. Char. Male, fcattered warts.
Female, fmooth fhields or tubercles, in which the
feeds are imbedded.
Spec. Char. Leathery, roundifh ; green and even
above; marked beneath with longitudinal branching
brown prominent veins. Shields anterior,
marginal, horizontal, round, dark-brown, with an
entire brown margin.

T h e fronds a re fm a ll, le a th e ry , a feending, rooted a t th e ir bafe
o n ly , d ila ted u pw a rd in to a wedge-like o r ro undifh fo rm ,
fcarcely m ore th a n h a lf a n in ch (rarely a n in ch ) lo n g , flightly
waved and lobed. T h e ir u p p e r furface is perfectly even an d
fm o o th , o f a fine g re en w h e n frefh, b row n or grayifh w h e n
d ry ; th e u n d e r fide downy, w h ite , m a rk ed w ith n um e ro u s,
lo n g itu d in a l, p rom in e n t (th o u g h flat), b ra n c h in g , b rown ifh
veins. Shields feveral, m a rg in a l, b u t moft c o n n e fte d w ith th e
u p p e r furface, feflile, ro u n d , d a rk , reddifh b row n , flat, fu r-
