Dill, in Raii Syn. 6 5 ,
A NATIVE of the high micaceous mountains of Scotland
and the north of England. It grows in denfe elaltic patches
creeping over the rocks. The item and branches are very
intricate, repeatedly fubdivided, unequal, roundith, folid, more
or lefs polithed, of a dark olive brown, almoft black, efpecially
when dry. Shields rarely produced, (fent us by Mr. J.Mackay,)
a little elevated, irregular, flattifh, polithed, rather blacker than
the frond, furrounded with an unequally toothed or fpinous
margin.
It is quite dittinCt from the L . chalybeiformis, and belongs
indeed to a different family of the genus. When deftitute of
fructification it is larger, more luxuriant, andfomewhat paler,
and is then the lanatus of moft authors; when in a fruitbearing
ftate, as in our figure, it is fmaller, and generally taken
for pubefeens; but we readily agree with Dr. Acharius that the
real 'pubefeens (of FI. Suecica at leaft) is Lightfoot’s exilis, and,
we beg leave to add, the fcaber of Hudfon.
