Female, fmooth fhields or tubercles, in which the
feeds are imbedded.
Spec. Char. Coriaceous, creeping in a fomewhat circular
form. Shields funk into deep pits in the
leaf, projecting on the under fide.

T h e fro n d s fpread circularly, a little imbric ated ; th e ir textu
re is le a th e ry , b u t te n d e r w h e n w e t ; u p p e r furface fmooth,
o a fine grafs g re en tu rn in g brow n in decay, the u n d e r fide
w h ite and downy. Shields deeply immerfed in fockets or
p ouches o f the fro n d in a very p e culiar m an n e r, for which this
cu rio u s fpecies is rem a rk a b le ; th ey are a little concave,
blackifh, w ith o u t any m arg in , b u t covered wh en young w ith a
fine lkin w h ich cracks in th e centre.
