J- HIS is one of our moft handfome Lichens. It occurs not
unfrequently on large trees, forming a fulphur-coloured patch,
confpicuous among the grey or green hues that ufually clothq
their bark; but the fructification is extremely rare. Mr.
Sowerby and Mr. D. Turner gathered our very fine fpecimen in
Cornwall, on large granite Hones. Hoffmann’s t. 39 is One of
the moft admirable figures any where to be feen, and much
preferable to what he has copied from Jacquin’s Colleftanea.
L. caperatus is fo named from its being tranfverfely wrinkled,
like a goat’s horn, which is fcarcely to be feen but in old
fpecimens, and is not peculiar to the fpecies. It forms patches
often a foot in diameter, lying clofe to the bark or ftone, def-
titute of hairs on both fides; of an elegant pale fulphur-colour
above, frequently powdery or granulated; black beneath. The
fhields are a little elevated, externally of the colour of the. leaf,
fmooth towards the bafe, mealy or granulated at the margin:
(heir infide of a bright reddifli chefnut.
