SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
He a t h , with bearded tips, within the hloflbiuthe
leaves grow by eights, are tremulous, bluntended,
and rough; the flowers are moll beautiful,
grow in whorls, arc eylindrically club-fhaped, and
crowded together.
DESCRIPTION.
St em fhrubby, erect, grows two feet high,
fimple at the bafe, with but few branches, which
are iimple, and long.
Le a v e s grow by eights, arc linear, blunt,
rough on their upper, and furrowed on their
under (iirface, tapering into long hair-like footftalks.
The F l o w e r s are numerous, nearly terminating
the branches, in fimple whorls, crowded together,
and clammy; the foot-fialks are long, bent
backward, with three floral leaves.
Em p a l e m e n t . Cup four-leaved, which are
la nee-fh aped, clammy, and prcfial to the blolfom.
Bl o s s om eylindrically club-fhaped, an inch
long, bent back at the point, the lower part of a
ftrong fkfh colour, the end green, comprelleii at
die mouth, whofe tegmenta are ltraighl out.
Chives. Eight hair-like threads fixed into
the receptacle. Tips bearded, and within the
bloffom.
P o i n t a l . Seed-veflel club-fhaped, and furrowed.
Shaft tbread-fhaped, ilmofl without the
bloflbm. Summit fhield-fhaped, concave, and
green.
Native of the Cape of Good Hope.
