SPECIFIC CHARACTER.*
HEATH, with bcardlefs tips, without the bloffoms;
which grow in whorls, are tubular, gradually
widening from an incurved bafe; leaves
growing moftly by fixes.
DESCRIPTION".
STEM fhrubby, upright, grows two feet high,
downy, quite intire at the bafe, then throws out a
number o f whorled, fimple, attending branches.
LEAVES g r o w i n g generally in fixes, linear,
bent backward and fpreading, plain on their
upper, and rolled back on their under, furfaee,
fharp-pointed, inflexible, with fhort leaf-ilalks
preffed clofely to the Item.
FLOWERS g r o w in whorls, nearly at the top of
the branches, of a fine light purple, and fnrniflicd
w i t h very fhort foot-ftalks.
EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved, which are
of an oblong-oval fliape, upright, ami pointed;
w i t h two floral-leaves elote t o it.
BLOSSOM tubular, with an incurved bafe, gradually'widening
towards the mouth, which is cut
i n t o four equal, fpreading lobes.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, ftxed in the
receptacle. Tips bcardlefs, without the bloffoni,
and deeply divided.
PoiNTAL. Seed-veflel turban-fh.aped. Shaft
thread-fliapcd, longer than the threads. Summit
four-cornered.
