SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEA TH with bcardlefs tips, within the blolToms,
w h i c h arc tubularly club-ihapcd, and nearly
white; flowers g r ow from the lower part of the
leaves clofe to the item in whorls, are an inch
l o n g ; leaves grow moftly by fixes, arc linear
and linooth, ftiff, and long.
DESCRI PTION.
STEM upright, grows more than two feet
h i g h and very ltout; the branches grow in
whorls, fpreading and upright, fcldom breaki
n g into (mailer branches, and like the Item.
LEAVES grow by fixes, are linear, fmooth,
fpread outward, and very long, the foot-ftalks
preffed to the flcm.
FLOWERS grow in whorls about the middle
of the branches, horizontal, and an inch in
l e n g t h ; the foot-ftalks very fhort, with three
floral leaves on them.
EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved, the leaflets
are awd-lhaped, broadeft at the bafe, linooth,
and preffed to the bloftbm.
BLOSSOM tubularly club-fhaped, blunt ended,
and nearly w h i t e ; the fegmcnts of the border arc
reflexed.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads fhortcr than
the bloflbm. Tips bcardlefs and within the
bloflbm.
POINIAL. Seed-bud turban-lhapcd and furr
o w e d ; hairy on the upper part, and glandular
at the bafe. Shaft th read-fhaped, and without
the bloflbm. Summit fhield-fhapcd.
