SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, with beardlefs tips, without the bloffoms,
and tapering into filaments, which are flat;
the bloflbm is conical, of a b l o od colour, having
the fegments of the m o n t h upright, and preffed
to the threads; the leaves grow by threes.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM upright, a foot and a half high, rough,
branching but little at the b a l e ; the fiualler
branches arc fcattered.
T h e LEAVES g r ow by threes, blunt ended, rather
downy, channelled underneath, having fliort
foot-fialks preffed to t h e branches.
The FLOWERS g r ow by t w o s , or threes, at the
end o f t h e fmaller branches, hanging down, formi
n g a beautiful tpike near the middle o f the larger
branches; the foot-ftalks are fliort, without floral
leaves.
EMPALEMENr. Cup double, and coloured,
the outer three-leaved, which are o f a broad oval
fhape, the ends greenifh; the inner is four-leaved,
broader, and larger than the former.
BLOSSOM, conc-fliapcd, near an inch long,
fmooth, deep red, the fegments of the mouth are
upright.
CHIVES. Eight flat dircads, much longer than
the bloflbm, fixed into the receptacle; the tips
beardlefs, without the bloflbm, and tapering into
the filaments.
POINTAL. Seed-veffel cgg- f h a p c d , a n d f l i g l u ly
furrowed. Shall thread-fhaped. Summit fourcornered.
Native o f the Cape o f G o o d Hope.
Flowers from Auguft, till December.
