of the leaves, are club-fhaped, and purple.
DESCRIPTION,
S t e m flmibby, grows two feet h i g h , and u p right,
fimplc at the bafe, t h e n branching out from
a whorl into ifmple afcending branches.
L e a v e s grow by lixes, arc linear, tremulous,
fliarp-pointed, fmooth, lightly furrowed on the
under part, and tapering into hair-like leaf-flems
a quarter of an i n c h in l e n g t h.
F l o w e r s are in whorls about the middle of
the branches, ftraight out, having ihort footfialks
with three floral leaves.
E m p a l e m e k t . Cup four-leaved, which are
lance-fhaped, lawed at the b a f e , g r e e n , and fmooth.
B l o s s o m club-fihapcd, an inch long, blunt,
ftraight, and purple, comprefled at the mouth,
w i t h a four-lobed, reflexcd border.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads fixed into
the receptacle. Tips beardlefs, and nearly o f a
l e n g t h w i t h the bloffom.
P o i x t a l . Seed-vefTel turban-fhaped, the t op
c r o w n e d by eight plumes of l o n g hairs. Shaft
thread-ihaped, and w i t h o u t the bloflbm. Summit
four-cornered.
