SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, with bearded tips, within the bloffomsj
winch are globe-fhaped, clammy, and in bunches,
bending downward, threading, and terminating
the branches; leaves growing by fours.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM fhrubby,grows three feet high,branched
nearly to the bottom, with long, flender, waving
branches.
LEAVES growing by fours, nearly triangular,
linear, bent back at the point, blunt, fmooth, and
furrowed underneath; leaf-Herns very ihort.
FLOWERS feveral, terminating the branches in
bunches, bending downward and fpreading, of a
brilliant purple, and clammy; with very long foot*
flalks, which are fumillied with '2 or 3 floralleaves.
EMPALEMEXT. Cup four-leaved, which are
egg-fhaped, blunt, upright, and half the length
of the bloffom.
BLOSSOM globe-fhapcd, with a four-lobed border,
each divifion forming a half-round, equal,
and upright.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, fhorter than
the bloilbm, and fixed in the receptacle. Tips
bearded, and within the bloffom.
POINTAL. Seed-vcffel roundifh. Shaft thicker
than the threads, and upright. Summit fourcornered.
Native of the Cape of Good Hope.
