SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, with bearded tips, within the bloflbms,
which arc an inch long, hanging downward, of
the lhape of an inflated cylinder, deep red, and
very long foot-ftalks; leaves growing by fours.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM upright, grows two feet high, limple at
the bottom, the branches growing in whorls,
nearly Ample, upright, and fpreading.
LEAVES grow by fours, fmooth, linear, iharppointed,
furrowed on the under part, and growing
ftraight out from the Item.
FLOWERS grow in whorls, at the upper part of
the branches, hanging downward, and clofe t o gether,
with long foot-fialks, that have three
floral leaves juft at their bafe.
EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved, which arc
of a broad-oval fhapc, fharp-pointed, the upper
part of a light red, the bottom of a green colour.
BLOSSOM is of a fwelled-cylmdrical fhapc, an
inch long, fonr-corncred at the bafe, and deeply
ribbed; the mouth is narrowed, and very nightly
cut; of a deep red colour.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; the tips are
bearded, and within the bloflbm.
POISTAL. Seed-veiTcl round, and furrowed.
Shaft thread-fhaped, the length of the bloflbm.
Summit four-cornered.
Native of the Cape of Good Hope.
Flowers from July, till November.
