SPECIFIC CHARACTER.

DESCRIPTION.
THE STEM fhrubby, about half a foot high,
cylindrical, thickifh, very much branched, the
branches bend downward, then afeend.
LEAVES g r o w i n g by fours, linear, p o i n t e d w i th
a recurved bafe, and an afcending point, ciliate,
fiat on their upper, and rolled back o n their u n der,
furface, fhining, the leaf-items very fhort,
and preffed t o t h e branches.
FLOWERS terminal, numerous, upright, level,
and in b u n c h e s ; the footftalks purple, h a v i n g t wo
fmall oppofite floral leaves at their bafe.
EMPALEMENT. Cup four-leaved, erect, k c e l -
fhaped, and ciliate.
BLOSSOM of an o b l o n g - o v a t e form, narrowed
toward the t o p , with a flightly reffexed border,
of a w h i t i f h purple, fmooth, and fhining.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads, nearly of a
l e n g t h with t h e bloffom, fixed into the receptacle.
T i p s within the bloffom fmall, cleft, and t w o -
horned at their bafe.
POIXTAL. Seed-veffel o b l o n g and furrowed.
Shaft thread-fhaped, of an equal l e n g t h w i d i the
threads. Summit nearly four-cornered.
Native of t h e Cape of G o o d Mope.
