This beautiful fpecies is generally found in the date de-,
feribed jn the fpecific charajfter ;,.but it appears to be fubiedt-
to great variety, two of which are exhibited j the‘lower and
larged' Ipecimeh having not only niof e blue on the head thati >
ufual" but 'alfcra pateh -of brilliant blue on each fide thh fekek,
and a mark -of reddifii brown or orange neaf-the fiiotdders. . 1
The tipper fpecimen is: cohfiderablylefs than that beneath,
and has; ftill more blue upon the head'} the beak and legs,
ffoaller in proportion, darker in colour, and the• fatter al-
mod black,. The head is crowned with a final} cred, ojf
bright azure; the cheek, and upper part of the Jback and
wings, are of the fame colour ; the lower parts of each brown.
The outer feathers o f the wing vvhitifii, near the fhoulder
marked with brown. The head, neck, and bread: deep
black; abdomen white, faintly tinged with duiky. Tail
black, highly cuneated. In this bird the blue is mod lucid,
compofed of fiiort, diff feathers* refembling fifh-fcal'es, with
Ihining furfaces; but it has not the: beautiful fcapulary
o f prifrnatic violet-colour, found in the other. Legs, feet,
and claws black, and extremely fiender.
