F r E Q U E N T in watery places and about the banks of
ditches, flowering in Auguft and September.
Root annua], fpindle-fhaped. Stem 2 or 3 feet high, upright,
branched, fpreading, leafy, angular, furrowed, fmooth. Leaves
oppofite, fmooth, deeply ferrated, cut into one large lobe with
two or four fmaller at its bafe. Flowers folitary, terminating
each branch, rather drooping, furrounded with feveral Ample,
fpreading, entire, rough-edged leaves. Calyx-fcales nearly
equal, flat, fmooth, ftreaked with brown. Florets yellow,
uniform, tubular and regular. Scales of the receptacle like
the calyx-fcales, but narrower. Seeds compreffed, furnifhed
with two or three angles which are regularly befet with little
reflexed teeth, and terminate in two or three upright triangular
bridles, likewife rough with reflexed teeth.
This plant is faid to dye woollen and linen cloths yellow,
but we have better materials for the purpofe in common.
