Flores plerumque terminales, erecti, capitati, nuraerosi,
violacei, pauci axillares, glomerati, omnes brac-
teis late-ovatis scabriusculis suflulti.
Calyx quinquefidus, subpubescens, laciniis erectis acu- i
minatis.
Corolla campanulata, limbo quinquefido patente, ex-
tus parce pilosa.
Stamina quinque: Filamenta alba, basi dilatata, mar-
gine ciliata: Anther« lineares, tortuosas.
Pistillum : Germen inferum, angulatum: Stylus lon-
gus, cylindraceus, pubescens: Stigma bi- trifidum.
Root perennial, inclined to creeping, woody, fibrous.
Stem from two or three inches to a foot in height,
simple, erect, angular, roughish.
Leaves oblongo-ovate, distant, rugose, rough, their
' margin crenated, pale beneath, veined; the lower
ones the longest, growing upon foot-stalks; the
upper ones sessile, somewhat embracing the stem;
the radical ones heart-shaped at their bases.
Flowers mostly terminal, erect, collected into a head,
numerous, violet-coloured, a few are axillary,
clustered, all furnished with broadly ovate rough-
ish bractea».
Calyx five-cleft, subpubescent, with the segments erect
acuminate.
Corolla campanulate, with the limb five-cleft patent,
externally slightly hairy. '
Stamens five : Filaments white, dilated at the base,
ciliated at the margin : Anthers linear, twisted.
