fidis. Capsula spharica (matura sulcata). ;
Caules cæspitosi, unciales vel sesquiunciales, in ß.
nunc tri- nunc quadri- unciales, parum flexuosi,
erecti vel rarius decumbentes, subramosi, quod
plerumque per innovationes accidit, inferne radic
e s tomentosis, füsco-ferrugineis, densissimis
obsiti, superne foliosi.
Folia numerosa, undique dense imbricata, subpatentia,
pue, parum revoluta, (Jig. 5. 15. & 6.) nervo
viridi conspicuo satisque crasso ad apicem usque
attingente prædita, et hic dorso serrata. Textura
rigidiuscula, reticulata tarnen areolis minutis. (in
ß . folia magis elongata sunt, siccitate e<regie
crispata, dirai in «. solummodo incurva.)
Fructificatio monoica.
Masc. terminalis, intra folia perigonialia ovato-lance-
olata, tenera, enervia, stellatim disposita, si ta.
em. quas etiam vere terminalis ob innovationes stepe
lateralis videtur.
Setæ solitariæ, erectæ, subpollicares, rubellæ.
capsula parum obliqua, ante maturitatem exacte sphæ-

Opebcuiiim convexo-conicuin, rufô-fuscum.
ISTOMIUM duplex ; ext. dentibus sedecim, angus
cuneiformibus, rufis, transversim striatis; --
membranaceum, plicatum, apice laciniatum,
cimis sedecim, oequalibus, bifidis, luteis, transi
sim lmeatis.
Stems cmspitose, an inch or even an inch and a half
long, (in (3. sometimes three or four inches,)
somewhat flexuose, erect or rarely decumbent,
frequently branched, principally with innovations,
below thickly clothed with downy ferrugineous
roots, above leafy.
L eaves humerous on every side, subpatent, green, more
or less tinged with yellow, and resembling in colour
an unripe apple, as much as the capsules
do m shape, the lower ones often brown, and
as it were injured, by moisture, all of them from
a dilated base becoming narrow lanceolato-subu-
late, flexuose, subcarinate, throughout their whole
length evidently serrulated, and, below the middle
principally, a little revolute, (fig. 5 . 1 5 . & 6.)
having a thick and green evident nerve reaching
to the very, apex, where it is serrated on the back.
I ex tore somewhat rigjd, with the areolas of the
reticulation minute, (in (3. the leaves are more
elongated, and when dry remarkably crisped,
- whilst in a. they are simply incurved.)
Fructification monoicous.
Male terminal, situated within the stellated perigo-
nial leaves, which are ovate-lanceolate, tender,
and nerveless.
• Female terminal, or if sometimes found lateral, only
rendered so by the innovations.
Fru it-stalks solitary, erect, an inch long, reddish.
Capsule a little oblique, before it is ripe exactly spherical,
green, like the leaves, and smooth; when
ripe more ovatej yellow-brown, and longitudinally
sulcated, with as many furrows as there are
teeth in the exterior peristomium: mouth contracted.
Caly ptha cleft OQ one side, in a young state cylindri-
. cal, (fig. 9 .) at length, on account of the round
figure of the capsule, wider and more open, as is
represented at fig. 1 0 ; the border is altogether
. entire.
Qperculum convexo-conical, reddish brown.
P eristome double; the exterior of sixteen, narrow cuneiform
teeth, réd and transversely striated ; the
interior membranaceous, plicated, and laciniated
a t the apex, with the laciniaj sixteen in number,
bifid, yellow, transversely marked with faint lines.
