Culms many from the same root, a foot or a foot and
a half long, geniculate, erect, at the. base only
oblique, simple, round,.or somewhat compressed,
smooth, striated, leafy.,
Leaves three, four, to six inches long, patent, linear,
• acuminate, carinate, smooth, the lower ones principally;.
the superior ones .nearly plane, below
smooth, above rough,, green. Sheaths generally
long, striated,, compressed, 'altogether smooth.
Ligule short, a little exserted, obtuse, membra-
. naceous. ..
Spike nearly erect, compressed, distichous, simple.
Rachis flexuose, striated, smooth, alternately furnished
with a projection, and canaliculated for the reception
o f the spikelet.
Spiicelets before flowering, closely oppressed to the rachis,.
alternate, sessile, ovato-lanceolate, .nearly
. acute, compressed, distant, in £>. collected together
at the extremity, simple, in y. branched,
many-flowered, in /S. only, about tliree-flowered.
Calyx of one leaf, (the. terminal spikelet having two
subequal leaves,) twice as short as the spikelets,
the glumes lanceolate, obtuse, convex on the exterior
surface,, with many strite, smooth, green,
at the superior margin .and apex diaphanous,
