This fine species o f Bo try ch ium is one again for which our collections arc indebted to the liberality
o f th e Honourable th e E a st India Company. In the Catalogue o f the E a st Indian Herbarium,
printed by Dr. Wallich, it is sugge sted that this species may probably he a variety o f B . lantc-
g inosum o f Wall., figured at Tab. 6 9 o f this work. I t should be observed, that we now possess
from the East India Company specimens o f B . lanuginosum thrice the siz e o f the specimen above
figured, but even more deeply and irregularly incised. W e know, however, how very liable the
European and North American B o lry ch ia are to vary in the more or less deeply divided laciniæ o f
the foliola ; and the present may possibly he th e perfect state o f B . lanuginosum.
W e p ossess also, from the southern states o f North America, a B o tiy ch ium w hich we can scarcely
distinguish from this but in its much smaller size.
