Caudex brevis, subrepens, squamosus, radicosus. R a d ic e s capUlares, fuscæ, ramosæ.
S tip ite s 2— 3 uncias iongi, erecti, angulati, ad basin usque pubescentes, inferne præcipue paleaceo-squamosi.
Frondes 4— G-pollicares, erectæ, subrigidæ, lanceolatæ, pinnatæ. Ra ch is ubique pubescens. Pinncc alternæ breviter
petiolatæ, horizontaliter patentes, lanceolatæ, obtusiusculoe, coriaceæ, glabræ, basi bastaiæ, lobis
duobus acuminatis porrectis, subtus nervosæ, margine paululum revoluto; infimoe su p rem oe qw minores,
subdeltoideæ.
S o r i subrotundi, ad latera costæ serie solitaria dispositi.
Capsulæ subsphæricoe, late annulatæ, breviter pedicellatæ.

Tins plant m habit more resembles an A sp id ium than a P o lyp o d ium ; but it is evident that the
fructification is destitute of an involncrc. Swartz had himself fir.st called this plant P . kustahtm,
blit afterwards altered it to P . hastæfolium, to distinguish it from P . haslalum of the Flora
Jap ón ica .
